  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New Kit
Hello, new to this forum and registered for this on-going and worsening eye problem my nan's rabbit has.
I first noticed symptoms around a month ago, we took it to the vet which we then paid £20 for a consultation and £40 for some eye drops...
Basically the rabbit had conjunctivitis but not by a blocked tear drop or bad teeth, something about possibly a piece of wood shaving caused irritation which then was infected.
The eye began to slowly improve morning and night wiping the gunk away and putting eye drops at the top.

I left it for them to handle as the problem was nearly non existent however now i have returned the problem has well... I will upload some pictures below but would warm they are quite disturbing.

Any guidance or information on what the condition is and what the action vets would take on this? My nan does not have a great deal of money so a head's up on cost's etc would be also appreciated.

Thankyou for your time and i understand it's not very nice to see. It's why i'm here to try sort this out.

 the rabbit needs to see a exotic vet who specialises in rabbits today, that looks very sore and needs attention immediately.

Is anyone else seeing what I see when I click on the links ? And I am NOT talking about a Rabbit with a severely infected eye..........................

Vets immediately

Yes i'm quite aware of the vet situation, and yes i know it looks sore...
Does anyone have any INFORMATION on the circumstances of this rabbit, i just looked into Myxomatosis thread, looks fairly similar...
Anyone shed any light if they have had this before?

Thankyou.

information - i would assume it has not healed as it should and possible become infected. there could be another reason for it if you sought advice from a non-exotics vets who don't have that much training in rabbits. i highly recommend not using woodshavings as they are not too good for rabbits anyway.

No, I just click on the photo and aswell as an enlarged picture of the Rabbit there are numerous .....errmmmmmm.......human anatomical images too !!
I'm on the Tapatalk app, when I click the pic I can either view an enlarged version of the photo, or follow the link. It took me to a website "vivastreet" :? Which contained adult content as it asked me to accept an adult disclaimer

The eye is severely infected and the cornea is probably badly ulcerated. The Rabbit will need aggressive antibiotic treatment and pain relief in an attempt to save the eye. Enucleation (removal of the eye) may eventually be the only option.

We aren't really qualified to give you information, we could only make suggestions.

seeing an exotics vet is the best chance this bunny can be given.

To me, the pictures aren't very clear so I'd have no idea what the cause is. I would get this bunny to an exotics vet asap.
