Dropped bun off for spay. UPDATE bunny is eating again :)

Hello everyone
Our doe, Cat, is booked in for her spay next week and I'm really bloody worried about it! I suppose I'm just looking for some positive stories of fast recovery and happy buns, I just seem to keep finding horror stories everywhere! A little aftercare advice too..
She lives with her neutered brother, should I keep them separate while she recovers?
I have a couple of fleece blankets and a pillow that she normally loves, would they be good to have in her cage? I'm worried about her weeing on them a lot and getting infected.
Is there anyone here who uses Ashleigh vets in Manchester that can tell me how much it is and if the price includes a few days worth of painkillers?

On a brighter note here's a picture of her on bunnydaddys shoulder

I would just make sure she eats and drinks and goes to the toilet when she comes home. I couldn't keep watch all the time when Skye got spayed so she stayed at the vets but she was my eating or pooing either

I had my 2 girls Apricot and Ginger spayed at the same time, I didn't separate them, they bounced back pretty well. As you say you want painkillers to bring home, don't allow her to jump up and down off things. Mine are outdoor bunnies and I brought them indoors into a dog cage and run for I think about 10 days. They went off hay a bit for the first day or so, I think it's usual for them to go off pellets. I'd get lots of her favourite forage in to tempt her afterwards. Mine ate hand picked grass and readigrass, rosemary and pellets, then went back onto their hay once they'd recovered a bit. She needs low litter trays so she doesn't catch their wound. I fed hay in a rack and just had newspaper in the tray until the wound had healed up, so stuff didn't get stuck in it. And I gave fleecy blankets to sleep on. My girls aren't very handle able, and after their spay when I wanted to check their wounds I would hold a treat high up so they would stretch up enough for me to look at their wounds. If she tries to bite at her stitches you could try putting on a baby vest to cover it, mine never bothered with theirs though.

Hope everything goes well for her :thumb:

Thank you those are some good pointers. I'm glad your girls recovered so quickly! She's normally okay with being picked up and prefers Oh to me so will probably have him do the checking

I know this isn't really related to your post but I've just noticed your buns are called Dog and Cat!! Haha! We didn't know what to call our girl so she just got called Bunny and we regularly refer to her as Bundog!

Anyway, back on topic... When Bunny was spayed she had to stay at the vets overnight because she wasn't really eating but as soon as we got her home on the Saturday morning she nibbled a few bits of dried carrot and some grass picked out the garden and had even managed a few pellets by lunch time. She was pretty quiet and just laid flopped out on her side for about 3 days and i kept her on cage rest for at least 5 days. She's a house bun so I just shut her in her indoor cage, which I would never normally do, but it came in handy. She just had "her" towel and I used a similar method to Zoobec to check her wound, mainly because I didn't want to hurt her if I handled her. That said we did have to give her painkiller and gut stimulant and that was not an easy task whilst trying not to touch her. I'd say after 5 days she was pretty much recovered and running around a small space, but we didn't give full run of downstairs and anything to jump on for 10 days.

Also, I would clear bunnies poops out regularly so I could see how many she was doing (the joys of bunnymummyhood!!).

It cost us £116 at our vets (not in Manchester) to get Bunny spayed including the meds and a pre- and post-op check up. They should ask to see her again 2-3 days post surgery to check her over.

I'm sure the beautiful Cat will be fine and home to you ASAP. Let us know how she gets on.xx

P.S. Sorry this turned into a mega post!!!

Haha it was my partners idea and it's pretty funny until you have to phone the vets!
No worries about the long post, thanks so much for thebadvice, I want to be able to do everything I can for her to make her comfortable. It's awful watching her run around with no idea what's coming :(

That was the thing that got me most as well... I just kept saying to my other half "She's going to hate me, she won't know that I've done it for her own good". But she seemed to forgive me pretty quickly so I'm sure Cat will forgive you too. :)

Cat is such a cutie. I am sure she will be fine tomorrow. We've had 4 does spayed now and all took a different times to recover but they did. .
But I do know how worrying it is. Try to keep yourself busy.
Huge vibes for tomorrow. Let us know how it goes.

Did a little cry in the car when I dropped her off.
Dog is running round looking for her as well. I've decided to 'home improve' the flat with a long and probably expensive trip to Ikea to keep myself busy for the day

QUESTION FOR USERS OF ASHLEIGH VETS
Are they going to give me painkillers for her when she's allowed to come home?
And not really important but can anyone who's had a doe spayed there tell me how much it is?

I use Ashleigh vets  but not had a doe spayed there. Harvey was neutered and vacc'd there though. Would take me too long to find the receipts but I think it was about £150.
Obviously a doe spay is a bit more intense and depending how she is they may want to keep her overnight which would up the price a bit.
Why didn't you ask them? Just give them a ring and get an estimate before you spend it all in Ikea :D
She should be given pain meds so ask for them when you pick her up. I'll watch for her picture on their facebook page :D

I have used Ashleigh for specialist advice and treatment, they are great. I am 99% sure they won't send her home without pain relief! Don't know cost though, sorry. Hope your bun recovers quickly x

you won't get a better vets than ashleigh vets round here so she will be in the best hands. they should give you pain relief after and she will have had an injection of some after the spay aswell.

as above, I went there once when mabel was very poorly, she was having a heart murmur checked out, which they said they wernt worried about and monitor for few months, after 3months it corrected itself, it was down to anaemia

Thanks for the vibes everyone.
She seemed to be okay when we brought her home yesterday, but my other half who'd been up most of the night to keep an eye on her, said she wasn't eating or drinking. When I got home from my night shift I got her to eat a piece of apple, so I left her some more before I went to bed. She's still not eating :(
She's been back to the vets today and had some more injections. They've given her an anti inflammatory and something to get her gut moving.
Really worried about her :(

try not to worry too much. it can take a while for them to settle again. she will most likely be very sleepy for a day or so. just make sure to keep all her food and water bowl close by. x

Has she passed any poo/wee ? Is she drinking ? Did the Vet advise you to give her some syringe feeds ?
