  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

neutering

I have just booked my female rabbit in to get neutered on the 26th September. Is there anything that i need to do when she gets home?
She is an outdoors rabbit with a large run area... should i bring her indoors during the day or at night to keep an eye on her? what should i do when she gets home? i will obviously asked the vet when she goes in but i want to make sure that i have everything ready for when she gets back. I have heard about vetbed.. should i use this?

The most important thing after the surgery is to ensure you're sent away with enough painkillers to last at least several days, if not longer. Rabbits hide pain very well so it's important to ensure adequate painkillers are given. Metacam is a popular choice.

It's also important to ensure she's eating, drinking, pooing and weeing regularly after surgery to ensure everything is okay. The vet will ensure she's done all these before she leaves but it's important just to check that she's ticking over okay, especially for the first night.

If the temperature is warm like it has been it should be okay to have her inside, but if it's possible it may well be best to have her indoors just so you can keep an eye on her better. With the temperature being so mild at the moment you can easily pop her back outside after a day or two with no repercussions in terms of her winter coat etc, so I'd recommend it if possible.

Vetbed is good - it's designed to suck any wetness away from the top of the material and give somewhere soft to sleep without irritating wounds. It could be very effective and helpful, however it's definitely not a necessity - a cheapy blanket or fleece would do a similar thing for your situation, as it's not likely that she'll be bleeding profusely or incontinent etc like some patients may be at a vets. Some substrates are best avoided after surgery if they're spikey or small, so laying a normal blanket or fleece down in the bottom of the cage would be good to begin with. After a few days the wound will heal more which means you can re-introduce substrates which you had to temporarily ban.

Hope everything goes okay for your little girl
