  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Subdued, tired, sleepy. Any thoughts please?

Wise Old Thumper
Crystal has chest issues, but these seemed to have stabilised and she wasn't labouring to breathe anymore.

She had an overdose of Xeno a couple of weeks ago, but recovered fine from that.

Friday night she went from being bouncy, at 4pm, to sad but eating at 6pm (so dosed up as per vets instructions), to shivering and shaking by 7pm. I took her in and her temp was 35.5  she was admitted, warmed up, dripped and medicated and came home yesterday.

They couldn't find the cause (not within her, nor looking at external things that may have caused a shock/toxic reaction). They tell me she's brighter (I was like, well yes, she's not an icicle anymore she's going to be), but they don't know if she's eating or pooing (she had her friend there too). she's not cyanotic. Her breathing was and is, very shallow. It doesn't seem like an effort, but it's definitely not right. They said to dose her up, syringe feed and keep an eye.

I've brought her home, brought them both inside, given a heat pad. She's eating and she's comfortable (haven't syringe fed, haven't given the gut stimulants either because that doesn't seem necessary). She's definitely livelier. She's not in pain. She just seems so very tired and keeps going to sleep. It's like everything is an effort. Her eyes are tired. She's sort of here but not. She's got the sad loppy ear she gets when she's not ok. That said, she feels peaceful and 'ok', so I'm comfortable that she's not suffering.

She presents, to me, as some of the other terminal chest bunnies have done when they were ready. I don't feel she's ready. The vets thought I was bonkers for saying that but I know my bunnies. But she's tired. She's lost her spark.

My feeling is something dire is going on, or has gone on inside her. This feels big.

But I may be wrong. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I'm thinking tomorrow my favoured vet is back, and I will try and take her to see him, unless she needs to see someone in the mean time. (and it's hard trusting vets you don't know, with such precious beings).

Sorry I am not helpful with health problems but sending millions of vibes and hope your favoured vet might have a better knowledge.

Have blood tests been done, they may give an indication if something is going on 'organ' wise or if she has an infection, anaemia etc.

Wee pet, you just feel so helpless when they're ill.

Sending you both loads of vibes and lots of love,,,

I would suggest a blood profile too. Anaemia is a possibility. Has she been drinking more than normal recently ?

I hope she will be OK xx

Good luck at the vets, I would definitely take her back. When Doughnut was ill and I took her to various specialists and vets and they all told me she was fine, I knew she wasn't. When I took her to my specialist now he said you know if your animal is sick and he looked into her eyes and told me she was very ill.

I think bloods is a good way to go, pleased you have a good vet who you can trust. I hope it's something simple.

Thanks guys- I forgot to mention we talked about blood tests.

Her drinking and everything else seems very 'normal' for her. I've not had concerns of that nature.

She's quite bright today and enjoyed being outside again too.

Will call tomorrow and see about getting an appointment with our regular vet.

That's how Ginger presented over her final few days, although brightish, would just sleep constantly if I didn't prod her and make her move.

I guess bloods also would be the only thing I could think of right now to see if there is something 'orrid going on.

As always, follow your gut, you taught me well!
