  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How do you cut your buns nails?
My female bun doesn't really like much contact unless it's on her terms  but her nails are getting long and very sharp.
She goes outside and digs in the mud and loves to dig on the carpet indoors but not on the concrete or anything like that so I think its definately going to have to be cut.

Any ideas are welcome

Thank you

Hi, I have to say I've never attempted to cut my buns claws. My girly is a feisty one, and I don't know anyone willing to hold her while I snip. My local vets does the job for me for £10, which I am happy to pay. I'm sure others will have suggestions for you though :)

It's a two person operation! My girl is just the same, a right fiesty little madam and the only way I can do it is to bunny burrito, get my OH to hold her still and then do one foot at a time. Her two front paws are easiest as they usually just come straight out of the towel but her back feet take a bit of rearranging to keep her tightly wrapped up but with just one back leg poking out! She gets grumpy and will charge at me afterwards but she's very good during.

 I'm so sorry I had to laugh at the thought of your bun charging. Mine does that if I put any food in her cage and then put my hand back in.
Ok well I think I might have to leave it to the experts then x

I saw a video that I replicated and now I cut all my buns nails myself; even timid little Caireann who doesn't like to be touched either. It's much less stressful on her than going to the vets. I'll see if I can dig it out for you...

Mine are pretty good about nail cutting so I do them myself. Kind of hard to explain but I sit on the floor with them in my lap and with one hand I lift the top half of their body up and clip with my other hand. Really quick and easy once you get the hang of it!

Admittedly this lady makes it look super easy but actually I got the hang of it really quickly

Thats a really good link. I have seen the lady doing the clipping before. I like her attitude. Seeing that video makes me feel more confident about doing my lots nails. I am rather looking forward to handling them like that. Hope they enjoy it as much as I will.

There's about thirty short videos on there by that lady for bunny care; they're great for learners like me, as they just give a bit of confidence and reassurance (although I don't think if be getting up to everything she advises lol)!
