  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore ear after vets stay

I've just brought my rabbit home after a 3 day vet stay for stasis, he had a dental when he was in also. He's an up eared rabbit but I've noticed he's holding one ear down and is reluctant to let me touch it. He flinched away when I brushed against it when I was syringing his meds.
His invoice says he had bloods taken 3 times and he had fluids given.
Would he have had bloods taken from his ear and just be a bit sore or is it something I should contact the vet about tomorrow?

He probably had an IV line in his ear for fluids. Is he still on pain relief ? Pain may effect his GI tract motility again. You do need to keep a close eye on the ear as on rare occasions it can start to go necrotic.

Yeah he's still on metacam. He's taken it no problems, I mixed all of his meds in with some pureed veg. He's just picking at his food at the moment but I'm going to sleep downstairs with him and prompt him with some food every hour. Have some critical care in case he isn't eating enough. He's tentatively munching on hay at my feet at the moment. He just looks so fed up :(
