Fur feeling dry and brittle.

Hi,

I've just found this forum and this is my first post.

I've got a 1 year old rex/lop cross who is in great health but his fur is causing me some concern. It's started to get very dry feeling and brittle on his back. His head, face are underneath are silky. Does anyone know what might cause this? Also any suggestions of anything I can use to help?

He eats well, a mix of hay, nuggets, veg and grazes all day in the garden. His Mrs is on the same diet and has lovely dense soft fur, she's more Rex and he's more Lop in the fur department.

I have no idea. I have Doughnut who is a lop and is on and off moulting but she is still soft to the touch. Hopefully someone else can help.

Whereabouts in Kent are you?

It could be due to fur mites or it could be due to the start of a moult. Without being able to see him/examine him it's impossible to say for certain. So I would advise you to get your Vet to take a look.

Older fur can sometimes become brittle especially if the bunny has been out in the sun, but if you notice anything unusual i.e. flakiness, excess shedding etc I might be concerned.

If you've had rabbits for a long time you might know what was going on but as Jane said, its always best to get it looked at by a vet if you aren't sure!

Thanks

Thanks for the comments guys. I sounds like it may be just all the time he's spent in the sun this summer :)

Lucky boy gets to run around outside all day enjoying the garden whilst I sit in my office watching him....jealous much?! He's otherwise completely healthy and no signs of mites. I will ring the vets see what they say, to be certain.

I guess I've been avoiding the vets a little these days, as last summer I was in there almost daily with my big boy Flash who died last August aged 4. It's both emotional and financial reasons I'm reluctant to go.
