  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Willow has ileus again.......the 3rd time in two weeks, obviously I'm going to talk to my vet about with is but I wondered why this is happening? what's causing it? He's teeth are fab (as far as I know) he has a good diet with no sugary treats and very rare sugary foods.....has anyone else had this? I'm worried it's something under lying :cry::cry:

this particular episode.....

Some belly pushing
Reluctant to eat, although he is nibbling hay (with encouragement) and has nibbled a tiny bit of veg, no pellets (all of which is odd behaviour, usually finishes food straight away)
He has pooped and they were perfected.huge and golden
He's had metacam and Zantac and water, nit syringe fed as been eating hay

What are his gut sounds like ? Do his intestines feel very gassy ?

Could it be a urinary tract problem rather than a GI tract problem ? Cystitis maybe ?

How much does he drink ? What is his urine output like in terms of amount/colour ?

Any sludge at all ?

I rushed willow to emergency vets this morning

He is in a critical state  first X-Ray showed full of gas and b.g was 11..... Put on drip and vetergesic etc
Second X-ray 1:30 mins later showed still gassy but stomach has less and has was moving through and b.g was down

I've been at work this morning with him and will go and syringe feed him later and take favourite things for him, he was trying to eat a tiny bit of hay as I left but is still really poorly :cry:

Poor lad

A bg OF 11 is not that bad and is as likely to be due to stress (from being at the Vets) than anything else. Hopefully he will soon be feeling much better.

Thanks for the vibes

Yes that's what I thought too jane, and at least it went down on second test, they were waiting to see if it rose up then they may have operated but were worried because he didn't seem stable enough to go through it, anyway at least it went down :thumb:
I'm lucky they are an exotic vets and I work there so I kept going into see him although ended up crying which didn't help anyone!

Just going to get him some fav foods and syringe feed him at 4 then at 8

I'll keep you posted

Update

Still not pooped :cry: I'm getting worried very worried
He may need surgery tomorrow  I hate seeing him so I'll......maybe it's not a good thing that I can go in and see him whenever I like? :( I find it so upsetting

So sorry Willow isn't doing well. Adding vibes and hoping things get moving again soon.
