Peoples experience of pet sitters?

tashp90

Warren Veteran
There's a database available for my area, and they all say that they will do a drop in for small mammals.

How do I know that they have enough knowledge about rabbits to notice something wrong?
Can I trust them to administer meds if need be?
What if the bun needs to go to the vets? Do I just sort out the bill with the vet when I'm back?

Just wondering what other peoples experiences of pet sitters are?

I tend to get a good impression from talking with potential pet sitters on the phone.

I rang one recently because I couldn't board someone's rabbits and was helpfully phoning around to find someone who could.

The lady who answered the phone (who came recommended) couldn't remember how big her hutches were  When she said she thought they were 4 foot, I said that's far short of the recommended size. She then said that I could have a 4 foot double storey hutch for the same price as a single storey. Then she added: "We're very good!"

Ummm .......

When it comes to boarding I tend to get a feel about their knowledge from the questions they ask me.
Unfortunately, down here there aren't many places who board indoor bunnies, so I'm trying to find someone who can come to the flat once a day to give them pellets, hay, water etc.
There's things going on with my family back in Wales and I may need to go back with only a few hours notice - in these circumstances someone coming here is a lot easier to arrange than the girls going somewhere else.

Would someone at the vet be able to help? Perhaps a nurse who lives not too far away ...

Ooo I hadn't thought of asking the vet. They may even know of a pet sitter to recommend

My vets do 'kittymates' (they're called Animates) which is where one of their own vets comes to your house and looks after your cats, but they also do other animals. I personally don't like using pet sitters (in case of fire or something but I know I'm a bit paranoid) but it's good to know they're there.

Your vets may do the same - it's definitely worth asking!

Luckily my neighbours would be pretty good if there was a fire. My alarm was going off a few weeks ago when I was making cheese on toast, they were knocking the door to see if I was alright, I didn't hear it, when I eventually did, they said they were about to knock the door down  they'd do the same if I wasn't here

I also turn all plugs off when I'm away for a few days, regardless of whether the rabbits are here or not

It is a worry though, but I'm not sure I'd like someone staying in my flat when I'm not here :/

With my pet sitter I just give her the vets details and my insurance details. She's never needed to use them yet though.
I contacted her by email and had a chat about what I needed and she had cared for rabbits before. She came round to meet the pets and look at the environment before finalising the booking so I could show her how everything was normally set up. I could see how she behaved with my rabbit as well which put me at ease.
She'll text me while I'm away to keep me updated and fills in a daily diary for me about what she's done and how much food was eaten etc.
I've never needed her to administer meds but I know she will do.
What area are you in because I can recommend Debra at Petpals if you're in Manchester :D

I'm in Taunton - a fair distance from Manchester :(
She sounds great though...If she wants to travel ;)...

I might spend a few weeks contacting some, and getting to know them. I don't need anyone yet, just want to be prepared :thumb:

Depending on how things pan out, I might consider being a roving pet sitter....specialising in......bunnehs!!!!!:thumb:

I hope you find someone/ somewhere suitable to help out on this occasion.:thumb:

You know you would be my first choice Mrs B! And I'd be more than happy for you to stay here!
I don't need anyone at this particular moment, it's just for future, and someone who could do it at short notice. I have a massive concern with leaving someone in charge who isn't clued up on rabbits or I'd end up worrying the whole time!
