Rabbit savvy vet - Bucks/Herts

Wendy-Jane

Alpha Buck
Hi guys - apologies for my recent absence from the forum, I kind of lost the plot

Please can anybody tell me if Guy Carter is still the best rabbit-savvy vet in my area? I am on the Bucks/Herts border, 12 miles north of Watford. And if not, who is?

Also, does anybody take other species to him or the practice?

I currently have my animals registered at Wendover Heights Vet Centre, and am looking to move all of them except the horses (the equine vets at WHVC are excellent). If possible, I would like them all to go to the same vets, but the most important thing is that I get the best rabbit vet around that's a reasonable driving distance (the other animals are less fragile and hardly ever ill).

So the animals I am moving are:

The buns - I have five now
Dogs
Chinchillas
Guinea pigs
Gerbils
Hamsters (2 robos, 2 Chinese and a Russian!)
Budgies
Hens

I'd appreciate any thoughts or experience on this.

Wendy x

I would maybe change the title of your thread to rabbit savvy vet and your area, you may get more responses.

Sorry I have no idea but good luck :)

Thanks - I'll do that (if I can work our how to ). I was wondering if I should have put the post in health, rather than chat???

It will probably be seen by more people in chat. To change the title edit your first post, then you'll have the option to change the title too.

Edit - Ah you've worked it out!

Last I heard Guy Carter was still at watford Medivet. Lots of people are also using Nine Lives in Redbourn if that helps

Thanks Rhian - I think I've concluded that EITHER nobody lives near me (which is a pretty safe bet anyway as I live in the middle of nowhere ) OR the people that have their rabbits registered with Guy are just so laid back and confident that everything is/will be ok that they are out playing somewhere (given that the surgery is open 24/7, 365 days a year), while the rest of us neurotic rabbit owners are stressing and chatting on-line in case we have an "emergency" and nobun to contact  That's defo me anyway

Thanks again - will check it all out in real life tomorrow :D

I recently heard from someone who went to Medivet in Watford and was NOT seen by Guy Carter - their rabbit was spayed by a different vet at the same practice and it was a disaster and the rabbit is now having to be treated at my vet (in Cambridge - a specialist exotic vet) for internal adhesions

I have seen Guy Carter at Medivet MANY times over the last 20 years. I recommend him wholeheartedly

I would recommend HIM - but have heard that the others at the practice are not so good at that you no longer necessarily see him or even if you do the ops are not necessarily done by him.

As far as I know Guy is still there, he was a year ago, fortunately I haven't had to see him for a year (fingers crossed), I went a couple of weeks ago and mentioned him and wasn't told he had gone.

I have been seen by other vets there also who clearly know there stuff about bunnies.

I live just outside Watford and use medivet, Guy is still there but doesn't seem to do much consulting these days.

I have heard great things about Emily at nine lives over a number of years and I have taken guinea pigs there.

Andre at animalism in St. Albans has been recommended to me recently too.

Many thanks for your replies on this, and also for your PMs.

Everybody seems to agree that he's pretty pawsome, so I guess I'll just have to "interview" him myself, and see if I think he's capable of looking after my precious bunnies and all the other residents of the Funny Farm

Thanks again - I really appreciate your opinions. xx
