Litter box confusion

New Kit
Hi all,

Today I went to clean out Ralph and Poppy's litter trays one was totally clean! Which I thought odd until I picked it up and saw all the wee was underneath, they are indoor rabbits but have an indoor cage with an indoor run attached, I was using wood shavings till I read on here that wood shavings isn't good for buns, so I changed to news paper and hay, since doing that they seem to think their whole cage is a litter box, I really would like them to use the litter boxes so I can change them everyday rather than have to clean the whole cage everyday, does anyone have any ideas? Can I use something else on the cage floor that they are not going to want to wee on?

Thanks in advance

X

A lot of people, including myself, use non slip Lino/vinyl or rubber matting on hutch/shed floors. Then you don't need to put any bedding on that, just use the newspaper/hay in their litter trays. They like to poop and pee while they eat so hopefully if you put the tray/s where they go most then it should make cleaning out a lot easier. If you use something a bit higher than normal cat litter trays, such as underbed storage boxes, then it will reduce overspray. Neutering/spaying should improve litter training too.

Thanks for replying, where can I get the rubber flooring/Lino from?

Lino/vinyl you can often get for free or very cheap from carpet shops. If you go to a local independant one and tell them the size you want they will often have a piece that to them is useless but will easily do a hutch. When you say it's for your rabbits they'll usually just give it to you for free :thumb: I've just done a double hutch, and I had to laugh when the man apologised and said the 2 pieces weren't quite the same colour, I said the rabbit wouldn't mind  Rubber matting you can find on ebay.
