  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Weeping eye

My lovely little girl has got a weeping eye. She's 4 and a half year old and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. The eye doesn't seem to be red, and she will let me clean it. I am going to take her to the vet on Saturday but am wondering if anyone has any tips on what to clean it with in the mean time? So far I've just been using water.

I just use cooled boiled water with a pinch of salt. Just as I would for my own eyes.

I have a weepy eyed bunny, and his partner does an excellent job of keeping it clean

Thanks for that, I was thinking about using salt but was a little worried as have not done it before. Can I ask what was wrong with your buns eye? You read so much on the internet, it gets quite scary! I'm hoping she's just had something that has irritated her as she is malting like crazy, rather than something more serious.

He came to me from rescue years ago with a weepy eye. It's always been the same, clear and not yellow, and the vet always advises that he's coping OK with it. She's reluctant to put him through a GA and tests ... I agree with her.
