  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sludge

hot cross bun

Alpha Buck
hi any tips and diet ideas for bun with sludge any advice welcome.

She has been opened up and had sludge manually removed over the last 12 months but present vet is unhappy with how frequent the sludge is returning in:cry:

Good hydration is the best advice I can offer.

Avoiding high calcium diet isn't just about cutting out high calcium veg as often high calcum veg is better to give than pellets ie fresh food with moisture content is always better than dry food.

Do you know if there are other factors such as arthritis in spine making the angle of urination different? Therefore possibly not fully emptying bladder etc. I'm wondering if other adjustments can be made rather than focusing on diet.

Is she on any medication? When Artie was being treated for chronic sludge he was on Metacam and Furosemide daily for about four years. Artie also had his bladder expressed on a 5 weekly basis to keep on top of the problem.

It is definitely essential to try to establish what the primary cause may be, as Bunny Buddy said issues such as arthritis may be involved. Just focusing on the diet may be only treating the symptoms not the cause.

Has the Vet run any diagnostics ?

thanks both, we are syringing her water every other day, wetting her low cal veg and vet has done xrays/tests and come back fine, apart from her teeth needing to be filed regular no issues?

Is she overweight ? Is she relatively sedentary ?

What type of hay do you feed her and what type of pellets ?

Pellets have been gradually stopped and she has oat hay, readigrass(limited), ings hay and we buy a bale from the farm not sure if that would be meadow hay?
