Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny sprained or broken left leg?

Hello everyone! Today I just noticed that my baby bunny who is almost 1 year olds was walking kind of weird. He was putting all his weight on his right leg and his left leg seemed weak. I'm really scared and worried about my baby bunny because I know he's hurt and in pain right now. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow morning. He's been eating fine and he seems to be peeing and pooping. Although I've noticed his poop seems to have gotten smaller in size. He can still walk and run, but I've restricted his free space by placing him in his carrier (w/ bedding and hay) because I don't want him to cause anymore damage to his left leg.

Do you think he will be okay? Do you know if it's a sprained leg or a broken leg? If it's a sprained leg, how long will it take to heal? If it's a broken leg, then what'll happen? I'm really worried and I'm trying to stay positive for my little prince. Prince is his name btw. I need some comfort right now because I'm really worried and I love my baby bunny so much. I just wish the best for him and that he'll be okay and that the injury isn't something too big.

Are you in the UK ?

He needs to see a Vet straight away as at the very least he needs pain relief

It is impossible to say if he has a break or a sprain or if the problem is something neurological. Only an examination by a Vet can determine exactly what is going on. So the best thing you can do is call the Vet now and arrange to take him straight in

Good luck x

If it's a sprain the vet is likely to give him painkillers and cage rest, if it's a break then depending on the severity of the break and where it is the vet might put a cast on it, put pins in the bones to hold it in place, or if it's a very bad break they may suggest amputation - but don't panic, rabbits do very well on three legs.

Painkillers are very important as rabbits in pain tend to go off their food which can lead to more complications, that's why you need to see the vet asap. If you tell them what the problem is they should fit you in as an emergency.

I would also echo the possibility of neurological issues as well as sprain or break (or indeed some pain in gut or bladder area causing hi to hold leg up).

he will need a full and good veterinary examination. Are you in UK?
