Bigwig is a boy again....

Hi,

I've not posted on this forum for a while but my hubbie introduced me to tapatalk which has now made accessing it so easy :) so ive been reading it again for a month or so.

My Rabbit, Bigwig is about 6 yrs old. I got Bigwig with his/her brother Hazel, from a local rescue centre when they were about 13mnths and I was told they were both neutered males.

However, when I took bigwig to the vets after quite a few months of having the bunnies, the vet seemed to think Bigwig was a girl as she/he developed a bit of a dewlap. So when Hazel died I took Bigwig with me to a specialist rabbit rescue who agreed with the vet that Bigwig was a girl. Based on this I got a little boy bun from the rescue centre and all was fine, they bonded within a couple of days and always got on well.

A couple of weeks ago my little dutch bunny died in the heat, so today we took Bigwig to the same rabbit rescue to find a new partner. When I said I didn't know for def if "she" had been neutered, the lady (same one whole told me bigwig was a girl 3yrs ago) had a look and said Bigwig is definitely a neutered Male!! So the original rescue centre hadn't been telling porkies after all!

Now we're all just really confused as to if we should be saying he or she.... after first few years saying he, then a few saying she and now back to he!

All I can think is that Bigwig was over weight and after getting fly strike last year I gave her/him a complete change of diet to fix urinary problems. This also resulted in loosing a lot of excess weight. Thats the only thing that I can think made it difficult to tell, and I've never been confident to check myself but I feel I now may have to learn.

Eitherway, for now, Bigwig is a boy again and has his first ever female partner! I just hope they don't take too long to bond.

Is it really so difficult to tell?? Has this happened to anyone else or just me? :)

I've only had my bridge bun mis-sexed as a female when I took him to a vet, but he must have been quite young as a few months later he became obviously male! However, I thought all older buns could develop dewlaps, though it is more prominant in females and larger rabbits.

This was Bugsy (a male) about 4-5 years ago, with a definate dew-lap forming.
