Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Scab/knot under fur

Young Bun
One of my bunnies has a lump underneath her fur. Had a look this morning and it looks like some sort of scab but it feels like it goes quite deep. Took her to vets and he said it could be grass seed or that she has had a scrap with her brother. But then my dad mentioned ticks and now I am really worried it might be that. The scab feels really hard like it goes quite far down/ Anyone else experienced this? Tried to get a photo but naturally she won't stay still!

Rabbits skin being so thin, their scabs can look a bit weird compared to what you'd be used to on people, for example.

A tick would be visible on the skin surface so I doubt it's that.

What did the vet suggest? If they think it's something under the skin it would need removing. It could also be a little abscess.

He didn't really say anything - he tried to pick it off and it only budged a little bit and then he said not to worry and to leave it alone. Yeah I know he would have noticed that - I just worry because it is near her back. I will try to get a photo and keep checking it to make sure it's going down/away. But I can't imagine it was done by her brother - it's not like a graze like a tooth mark leaves.

Tully got bitten during a bonding attempt last year and it felt like you describe. There was a big lump which was mostly dried blood/fur which the vet cut off and then scraped back the scab. There was still a lump after where the skin was swollen and eventually a small abscess formed.
What did the vet say to do?
