  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Tooth root bunny advice please

Wise Old Thumper
I'm a bit worried about Digby. He is fine in himself, but his nose is very snuffly. There isn't actually anything coming out, it's just noisy. Definitely just in his nasal passages though. He has a problem with the roots of his incisors, which is why he had a GA last month for a dental. But if you remember, it nearly ended in disaster, so i am petrified of putting him under again, as he is old now :( he is on a high daily dose of metacam already. Does anybody know what else could be done to help him?

The hot weather doesn't help Rabbits with any sort of nasal problems, so that may be a factor for him at the moment. He made quite a bit more snuffly, especially when eating. If there is some thick mucus up there then giving a mucolytic such as Bisolvon can help thin it out and allow it to drain.

Does he get runny eyes too ?

Thanks guys; Jane his eyes aren't runny, occasionally there is some white stuff in the corners but not much. Today he has actually stopped the noisy breathing, but strangely, Daisy has some dried gunk on top of her nose which can't have come from her! So maybe he's sneezed all over her, poor Daisy!

I suspect that his nasolacrimal ducts are becoming blocked, a secondary symptom of his tooth root elongation. Has he had this possibility checked out ?

Not recently, normally his metacam keeps all his symptoms at bay :? Before he was diagnosed with tooth root problems, he had his ducts flushed in case they were blocked, but they actually turned out not to be at the time, although his symptoms were similar to what they are now. I am suspecting that maybe the vet didn't do a proper job of his teeth this last time, as he was panicking about the emergency tracheotomy he'd had to do, and the fact that Digby had been under GA for about 90 minutes!!! I am going to speak to him about it. If he didn't, Digby went through all that trauma for nothing :(
