  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

exess licking

mini lop1

Wise Old Thumper
could this be down to sox kidney disease? he never used to be like this, I first noticed it staring at beginning of year, then when he had his episode he tried to take it out on my rug, and he tries to leg it in to bathroom to lick the wall tiles so I make him come out , or when he was at nans he tried licking the bricks :? could he be deficient in something, could it be due to his kidneys, or has he suddenly developed a strange habit, that he never did for 2years

Looking for something salty maybe? :? I know that salt helps the body retain water. Since his kidneys aren't 100% that might be a craving.
I don't think most bunnies need things like mineral blocks if they're eating properly though. Has anything in his diet been restricted? Or could his mouth be dry and he's looking for extra moisture? Did it start before or after he was diagnosed/medicated?

It can also become a behavioural thing. As he is a Dental Bun it may be tooth related. I would not give him anything like a mineral block to lick as they can make some renal problems worse.

Thank you Jane, I just realized I hadn't explained that well.

thanks, it started a year after being on fortekor, so a year after being diagnosed, never did it before, part of it being psychological behaviour now was in my mind
