A Barney update for those that have followed his story

Hugo's There

Wise Old Thumper
As many of you know Barney came to us 3 weeks ago. Since he has been with us he has been extremely bright and happy with no hint of his tummy problems. We have increased his food range considerably with no negative effects :D

But from the day he arrived we were concerned about his urine. We were hoping it was the medication he was on affecting it as neither us or our vet has experience of using it in animals. But today we got the results back. He has a nasty bladder infection - Enterococcus. It is highly possible that it has been this all along causing Barney's tummy problems. The bad news is that this infection is highly resistant to antibiotics so its going to be a poopy to treat. :( The vet is arranging some human medication for him so hopefully we can finally get him on the right treatment in the next few days. Looking online it seems that it is contagious, something I will check with the vet tomorrow, if so Barney will obviously stay a single bunny for the foreseeable future. But for now I am just glad we seem to have got to the bottom of Barney's issues quickly and can hopefully get him back to full health ( not that you would know there is a thing wrong with him the way he bounces about!!)

I thought it would be good to share this as I know many of you have given support to Barney in the past. Also to say when you have a long term gut issue it often pays to think "outside the box" and look beyond the digestive tract as tummy pain can be a symptom of so many things in the body.

Glad to hear barney is doing well and there have been some revelations in relation to his health :)

That's good news in terms of progress; not so good for poor old Barney but paws crossed for him.

Hope you can knock his infection on the head and it would be wonderful to hear he is in full health eventually. He certainly deserves it. What made you suspicious of his urine? Good luck with Barney.

Thank you for this update. I've always had a soft spot for Barney. Hopefully you can get him sorted out so he can have a friend in future. Xx

Poor Barney first E Coli and now this  AFAIK Enteroccoci infections usually start in the gut. Hope he will respond to treatment and then be able to have a friend.

I know, poor Barney  It starting in the gut after the ecoli makes sense.

tonibun, his urine was just the wrong colour and smelt funny. I know urine colour can vary widely so thought I may be over reacting but there was nothing in his diet that would explain it unless it was his medication. It just niggled me so thought it best to get it checked. In house tests came back completely clear, it was the lab cultures that gave us the results

I'm glad that Barney is feeling well in himself, hope he can be treated so he can have a friend in time :thumb:

Poor Barney indeed :( he has been let down by three vets, one of which was a specialist :( Urine tests were never even mentioned, and his urine never seemed strange here - Molly's did, but not Barney's. I am very glad that finally he has been diagnosed with something that is hopefully treatable, and it is great that you have updated on here so that everyone who supported us can see how he is doing again.

I would just like to mention that although you say there has been no sign of tummy problems since he arrived, to somebody who doesn't know him, you wouldn't be able to tell. It is the way he lies and it is in his eyes, and only at certain times of day. So if you are not sat with him at that time you would never know; and especially as he is now outside in the shed. Barney is (or was) a very sociable bunny, and loved being stroked and snuggled on the floor, and just having company. I do believe he will love being outside as you say he does, and he will love playing out in the garden  I hope that he is not too lonely the rest of the time though, that makes me sad. It will be awful in bad weather when he can't come out :(

It would be amazing if he could return to full health and not need any meds.

Having said that, if he does get rid of his infection, he won't fit your Rainbow Rabbit criteria any more!! He will not be chronically ill or elderly. I am not sure what that will mean.

In the meantime, I would like to send him tons and tons of love and kisses, which you can give him for me, and I hope he feels better very soon. He is hugely missed.

Good to see an update on Barney, and I hope the thinking out of the box results in successful treatment of his problem. x

Lovely update on the gorgeous Barney :D :love::love:

I hope the vet can sort out his bladder issues soon xxx

Aw poor Barney :( well done that a cause has been found! :)

Mimzy gets a weird smelling dark urine from time to time but we've never tested for this pathogen that I know of. :? Will have to mention it when we next see the vet.

After having kidney and bladder issues myself earlier this year I can attest that anything going on in that area just turns the rest of the gut upside down. It took me months to feel even remotely myself afterwards.

I hope he will be doing better soon and that the infection is sorted quickly. Sending vibes and prayers for Barney. xxxxxxxx

Apparently Barney is really ill after his new medication disagreeing with him. I know this as a friend has told me. I am worried sick as he is now barely eating.

I saw that on FB, bless him. He is such a cute looking chirpy bun. I really hope the new course of action that Liz has taken will see him improve. Antibiotics can be really tricky in anyone but especially bunnies.
