Eye infection Woes

iggyperdyandme

Alpha Buck
Betty had a little bit of a pink eye lid last night and today she has puffy eyes and some tears

We were doing so well and she hadnt had one for ages except a minor pink lid about a month ago. I have bathed her eyes and applied the medication from yesterday (from the vets - she has blocked tear ducts from her teeth). I know im just moaning but I hate seeing her unwell.

Is there anything anyone else does for their rabbits with poorly eyes. I know the infection passes quickly after a couple of days but I feel a bit helpless.

Its worse because she was supposed to have her vaccinations this week but i dont think thats going to be possible now. :(

I'm so sorry Betty is poorly again :(

I have no experience in this filed I'm just bumping for you and sending you a hug (I know how stressful having a poorly bun is )

Hope someone will provide some advice for you soon

Thank you both! Her eye is still weepy this morning and looks a bit puffy but not half as pink so hopefully she is on the mend. She woke me up by plonking herself on the bed this morning to remind me it's breakfast time so she's still herself!

I was feeling a bit disappointed for her that she had gone so long without a full on infection. I had hoped we had caught it early enough to prevent her looking as poorly as yesterday because it had only just started to go a tiny bit pink thurs when she first had her meds. :(

Is it fucithalmic you have? There is another stronger ab eye drop you can get called tiacil. Or you could look into steroid eye drops, you can get one with steroid and ab, though obviously that wouldn't be good long term. Good luck with it :)

Thanks :) We have the maxitrol ones now. We tried tiacil but they worked for a little while but stopped. We just use them when she has the infections rather than all the time. She has some pain killers too, just in case. I would be interested to know the ones other people bunnies are on though :) or if anyone had looked into surgery and it worked.

We were told her head is too tiny to consider surgical options and her teeth and jaw recover well :(

Hi, I dont have anything helpful to add, but I just wanted to empahise. Merry has the same issue (I think I told you that before), but he only ever gets a bit of discharge and no swelling. I've opted not to try for surgery because he seems well and I cant cope with having two rabbits undergoing anaesthetics. I'm still battling away with Pippin's abscess which just will not go away. He's just so fed up with having his face prodded.

Oh no! Poor pippin! Abscess sounds really horrible. :(

Poor merry too!! I hope he is well at he moment. We were told by our vet that hey could refer us to a specialist service for the surgery but given the state of her teeth, and that the infections have been quite sporadic for a fair while, I decided not to pursue it. I do worry that I made the right choice for her though.

Does merry have the same drops as Betty? Can I ask how often merry has discharge too? I worry about the frequency of Bettys infections.

I've had fucithalmic and tiacil or genticin (which I think are the same thing). Either one seems to work fine. His eyes are almost always a bit weepy but that's just tears. The liquid quite often seems cloudy, which I thought was infected, but then the vet told me that it's only the goopy white discharge that I really need to worry about. So it's not very frequent that it gets that bad - maybe every six months? I'm not entirely sure because sometimes his eyes seem to have cleared up by the time I've got back from work (probably because his brother help clean them), and it's not that often that I need to give the eyedrops. It really doesnt sound like his problems are as bad as Betty's. He's never had any kind of conjuctivitis or puffy eyes.

I'm actually using fucithalmic for Pippin's eye's at the moment (and have previously used tiacil/genticin) along with the anaesthetic drops. And his tearducts are infected with abscess pus. So I'm not sure there's a more effective type of eyedrop. Although maybe Pippin cant have anything else because of all the trauma around his eye. He has some Exocin as well which I think are actually eye-drops but I'm using those in his abscess drainage hole.

It's strange how differently the same or very similar problems present!! Betty had tiacil and fuithalmic drops but they only worked for a bit and we had them for weeks with no affect. She must be affected by a different sort of bacteria or have developed a tolerance.
She has very white eyelid rims naturally and when she gets her infections the fur around her eye gets damp and had a clear discharge but her little white eye lids get raised and pink but not so much that it makes her eye look closed or it affects her vision. I will try to take a picture when she stays still. She went through a spate of having them all the time but recently since we have the steroid drops, only twice I think this year. I call it an infection because when we were treating her with the other drops from the vets, it got more and more puffy and the discharge went all clear with white bits in which the vet said was an infection. I sometimes see Betty have what I think is perhaps a bit of dampness under her eye and by the time I get home, her Friend Walt has cleaned her eyes for her too
Thank you for sharing because I don't know many people in real life with rabbits and it does help to hear about the treatment and progression for other peoples rabbits. I hope the tiacil works for pippin and his abscess clears up soon. It worked for ages for us but she prob became a bit tolerant to it.

A friend suggested the following when Poppet woke up with a poorly eye very recently:

Boil water and pour in a mug. Drop a tea bag in and brew. Remove teabag and let it cool down. Place over infected eye, or gently wipe around it. We did this twice, and it worked wonders. :thumb:

Good luck xx
