  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Insurance

We haven't insured our rabbits but payed the price when we bought my now four year old from Pets At Home a few years back, he developed an eye problem the vet says was caused from terrible conditions at birth (makes you wonder about these pet shops but I fell in love with him). A half-blind rabbit and £400 later and he could live as normal again. Not worth the risk having them uninsured :(

Many people do, but some prefer to set aside an amount each month. I'm with PetPlan. Vets bills for rabbits can run into hundreds, so you need to think about it carefully before deciding not to insure.

They are insured and with pet plan, I chose them due to the fact our vet deals directly with them, which I feel is a bonus,

I pay 10.75 per bunny, and 78 for the two dogs,

I was just asking to see if that was the normal thing to do,

Thanks

Sorry, I misunderstood - thought you were trying to decide whether or not to insure.

i've just spent most of this month's salary on susie, my bunny who sadly passed last week

i have insured neville with petplan, as i can't afford situations like that in the future...

I have both girls insured through PetPlan and have made claims in the past but the premiums haven't really gone up that much; just has this year's renewal through and it's £20.72 for both girls, so just over £10 per bunny per month. They've just turned 3 years old and I insured them at 6 weeks old. The premiums began at around £8 per bunny per month, so have only gone up by £2 per month in 3 years - not bad I say!

I insure all the bunnies - 4 of them. The prices range from £6 per month to £8 per month, so all 4 are insured for about £30 per month

In the last month Skye has racked up over £1,000 of bills and still counting. There is no way I could afford to pay that much, I mean what if all 4 managed to rack up the bills like that, and where would I find multiple thousands from , let alone how would I pay it off.

It's a complete no brainer in my opinion.

Yes and no. My older ones aren't as I never seemed to get a bill that was higher than the excess apart from dentals which insurance companies are funny about. However after a bad spate where I had a few bunnies ill at once and as my numbers grew I decided to insure any new additions incase god forbid everybun was ill at once. A few I can cope with, but vet bills for 12 would bancrupt me.
