  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

To spay or not to spay?

For an 8 year old bunny....what do people think? She is happy although not eating hay. Has anyone else had a bunny of this aged spayed and were they ok, did they recover well?

Difficult one :?. If she's made it to 8 years old with no symptoms of uterine cancer then there's a distinct possibility that she's in the 20% that won't get it. Of course with a competent bunny-savvy vet, there's also a good chance she'll come through an operation with no problems. However, it's a big operation and older animals find it harder to get over, take longer to heal etc.

I think if she were mine, I wouldn't operate given what you've said. However, I wouldn't rule it out either if someone could persuade me it was in her best interests.

thanks i am worried about getting her spayed but would like whatever time left to be with another bunny and not sure about how she would bond if she hasn't been spayed. She is amazing so so loving and friendly I can't believe someone has given her up at this age. I'm a bit worried about her teeth as well she literally eats no hay at all? she loves her pellets and veg and has eaten some brambles but she is a very fussy old lady...she even turned her nose up at baby sweetcorn!

I've bonded 2 unrelated and unspayed female bunnies (before I knew better I hasten to add) so it's perfectly possible to do it if she's not neutered. Perhaps try to find her a calm and plumless :)shock:) gentleman friend.
