  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eaten a weeks worth of food!

Came downstairs this morning to find my bun had gotten into the Fibrefirst and eaten about a weeks worth. He's drunk his whole bowl of water and filled his littertray and he seems fine but is just lay stretched out on the floor. I'm not sure when he will have done it, it will have been between midnight and 8am.
I'm going to keep an eye on him today but is there anything I should look out for, will it make him ill at all?
Don't worry I've already moved the box well out of reach!

My rabbits did this once, broke into their excel pellet bag overnight and probably had a few weeks' worth in one go. They were quite lazy the next day and spent the best part of the day stretched out under the sofa looking a bit hungover! I only gave them hay and water for a 1-2 days and they seemed to be fine.

I would restrict him to hay only for the next 48 hours. Keep an eye on his output and have a feel of his abdomen to make sure it does not feel bloated.

He should be fine, but if you have any concerns or if he becomes subdued or restless and seeming not to be able to get comfortable then you need to call your Vet. Same applies if there is a lack of poo throughout today.

Thanks everyone :D
I've emptied his littertray so I can see what he does today. He's still nibbling on hay and drinking water and has assumed his usual Saturday morning position of stretched out in front of the patio doors. His stomach seems fine, looks the same as usual. My vets has their own out if hours cover so I can give them a ring if anything changes.
I'm still amazed as to how he got into them! Ninja rabbit!

At least he stole a Rabbit safe food and not a full bag of Doritos or a packet of Chocolate Digestives !!

You may see a lot of uneaten cecotropes as well. When mine did it, I just kept them on hay for 2 days and kept a close eye on them.
