Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Possible tooth root abscess

New Kit
My lovely 5 yr old bunny Bella developed a runny eye last week so I kept an eye on it and bathed it, two days later her eye was swollen so took her to the vets. I assumed eye infection or maybe grass seed in eye as the grass had got really long in our garden - she's normally an indoor bun so not used to being outside until recently.

The vet examined her and said either tooth root abscess or brain tumor (both much to my horror) and said she needed to come in for anesthetic and X-rays to see what's going on. She's insured with petplan but they won't cover dental and really don't have any money to pay myself so we are waiting for pre-authorization from them.

Thing is whilst we've been waiting, Bella has vastly improved, no more pus in eye and visibly less swollen, she's eating and drinking brilliantly and full of life as ever so I'm really hoping they have it wrong.

Could it simply be an eye infection or do abscesses come and go like this?

Hello

Abscesses behind the eye do not just come and go. They are very often related to tooth root problems so it is perfectly reasonable for the Vet to suggest Xrays.

Did the Vet start your Rabbit on antibiotic treatment and non steroidal anti-inflammatories ?

AFAIK Pet Plan should cover treatment for this sort of condition :?

That's good to know petplan should cover it, though they are a petplan vet and said it was highly unlikely! I'm happy for her to have the X-rays etc, just the cost was prohibitive at £350 just to look at her if we wouldn't get anything back,

They didn't give her any medication, just eye drops to keep her eye lubricated.

This.

Erin had a tooth root abscess last year which was treated, the treatment included having a tooth removed. Because the tooth was removed the opposite tooth (above the missing one) now forms a spur. Pet Plan have paid for the initial treatment and all dental treatment since.

How experienced is your vet with rabbits? I would be tempted to ask for a referral to a specialist in the case of it being something complex. I'm just making a wild guess that you vet isn't used to dealing with insurance claims for rabbits if they thought this treatment wouldn't be covered, therefore *might* not deal with many complex cases for rabbits.

Petplan covered my rabbit when she had a tooth root abscess.

My understanding of their dental policies is that they don't cover filing down of teeth but they do cover other dental related issues as long as bunny has had a dental check up in the last year.

thanks, thats so reassuring, she has regular check ups and her teeth were only checked in March, and they were perfect at the time. Ive been distraught because its my worst nightmare not being able to treat my pet due to cost - hence buying insurance, and I thought I was pretty much faced with euthanising her, which is just awful as other than the swollen eye, shes happy as ever.

we've recently moved so the vet is new to us, but they said how nice it was to see a rabbit thats being cared for properly and how unusual it is to see an insured rabbit, so, thinking about it, maybe they dont have a whole lot of experience with rabbits
