  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New Kit
Hi, This is my first post at Rabbits United and I am seeking some help ! My wife and I have a total of 39 rabbits and we have seen various conditions etc, all of which have been treated successfully. Three days ago, Sugar, a 3.5 yr old female has gone off her food but is still drinking water. She has also taken to sitting on her haunches with her eyes almost shut completely, her head tilted back and breathing quite heavily. She sits like this for 3 - 4 hours. She has been given her usual access to open garden and tends to sit around quietly instead of her usual mischief of digging etc.
Has anyone seen this type of behavior or can they identify a possible cause ? A trip to the vet will no doubt be my next plan of action if I cannot identify this strange behavior.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Paul

Welcome to RU.

I would get her to a vet as soon as possible, it sounds very similar to how Nutmeg was before her heart condition was diagnosed. There could also be breathing problems as well.

Hello

It sounds as though your Rabbit is exhibiting very worrying symptoms of respiratory distress. Possibly due to infection or maybe a heart condition. This really needs urgent Veterinary attention- as in today

The fact that she is not eating is in itself enough to merit an urgent Vet consultation. This being made even more essential given her other symptoms.

Is she spayed ? If not then her breathing problems may be due to lung metastisis from Uterine Cancer- ie cancer of the uterus that has spread to her lungs

Please do not delay taking her to a Vet, it really is essential.
