White discharge HELP

Tanya015

New Kit
Hi Everyone,

Today i noticed my house bunny Rosie, who is 6yrs old has been fussing with her lady bits and she was smelling a bit, so i picked her up and turned her over, and noticed that she had a large bit of white discharge at the side of her genitals. So i cleaned her up as best as i could. But I'm in need for help on this. She is her usual self, her behavior hasn't changed or her eating habits and she is not in contact with any other rabbits. I haven't changed anything to do with her lifestyle such as food or bedding. So what do i do? do i observe her over 24hrs or do i just take her to the vets to be safe.

Any Help will be appreciated

Many Thanks
Tanya

it sounds to me like uterine cancer or most probably pyometra (both cause discharge). what the vet says is correct in terms of unwanted pregnancy's but neutered female rabbits don't get the above diseases so tbh i am pretty disappointed in the information your vet has supplied you with. as long as she is eating and drinking and doesn't seem in pain i would get her to the vet first thing tomorrow :thumb:

No, the vet told me. I wouldn't have to because she is not around any rabbits

Unfortunately it doesn't sound as though you have a rabbit-savvy vet - who would have told you of the very high incidence of uterine cancer in un-neutered female rabbits.

I think your rabbit needs to see a vet tomorrow, as a matter of urgency, and I would see if you can find an exotics specialist (ie a vet who specialises in rabbits) as she sounds very poorly.

Whilst there is a possibility of it being a uterine infection/uterine cancer it might be that she simply has impacted scent glands. Have you checked them ?

Thank you so much for your help, i'll ring the vets first thing in the morning and hopefully they can help my Rosie and its something treatable.

As Rabbit's age they can become less able to clean 'down below'. Although 6 is not really old so if it is that her scent glands are impacted there may be another reason to account for it. I would still take her to a Vet tomorrow.

Thanks all, i defiantly think its that glad its swollen and red in that area. But i am still taking her to the vets just to be safe. Thanks again.

I hope I haven't caused un-necessary panic.

here here  i would still take her to the vet tomorrow as the fact it is white is a bit strange for scent glands? Jane? you know best!
is it coming out of they actually 'moomy' or to the side of it?

How is her weight? She isn't chubby at all is she? One of my rabbits was overweight and I had a similar problem with her scent glands...they were red, spotty, smelly and had a white discharge. After back and forth to the vet numerous times the thing that worked was a combination of cleaning the area with a very diluted hibiscrub (the vet can give you this), plus a steroid cream and some aloe vera gel to sooth the area, antibiotics and also a diet. As soon as she lost some weight it 'touch wood' hasn't returned. I would get her to the vet as obviously uterine cancer is a worry if she hasn't been spayed but it does sound like it's more of a problem with her scent glands. Can I just say that the scent gland should smell like really strong coffee....it's actually the same stuff that skunks spray but in a waxy format hence why it smells so putrid!

I think I must be the only person who doesn't mind the smell...........

I must admit Jane I can cope with it but it reminds me of coffee and I absolutely hate the smell of coffee. Maybe you should get some skunk scented perfume then

I would also suggest getting her spayed asap, as she is high risk for cancer. Fingers crossed the discharge is nothing to worry too much about. x

Just wondering how you got on at your vet visit. Hope it went well and there is nothing seriously wrong.
