  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Annie's Spay - Stitches taken out, now Staples!

Annie was spayed on Wednesday, took her for her 2 day check yesterday and the Vet said she had taken 2 of the stitches out (not unusual) but in her case there were no subcut stitches and the skin had opened up a little bit. So the Vet put 3 staples in, but they have all been taken out with no sign of them ? Her wound looks clean and healed so I am not taking her back until Monday but will she have swallowed the staples I wonder? As soon as I saw her this morning she had a very guilty look on her face and I wondered if she had taken them out but I didn't really think she would have. Only one of my other bunnies has had to have staples put in but she left them alone.

Why were there no subcut stitches? That's weird that they haven't done any - we practiced rabbit spays at uni and no one ever mentioned not using them! :) not sure if she's a special case though :)

Have you had a check around her hutch just to see if you can find them? :) I'm sure she won't have eaten them! Glad it's healing well even without the stitches and staples! :)

Yeah the Vet said if she'd done the op there would have been subcut stitches. She said she would make a note of it. She seems quite pleased with herself!
