  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I hate to ask but

I need to know approximately how much a head X-ray is likely to cost. Helen, The Duchess, found a lump by Molly's ear during bonding yesterday and it looks very likely that she has an ear infection. She is booked in at the vet tonight when we will know for sure but a head X-ray seems a real possibility.

I hate to ask because I would do anything for Molly but I need to prepare myself. Anyone had a bun need diagnostics and treatment for an ear infection and how much did it cost?

All Vets set their own fees, so I think you might be best advised to ask for a quote from the Surgery themselves. It sounds as though the problem might be an ear-base abscess (the lump) and usually this requires surgery as well as Xrays, swabs (to identify the exact bacteria involved) and appropriate antibiotics based on the swab/culture results.

on my dog the cost was £40 per x-ray plus the cost of the anasthetic which was considerably more.
if I were you I would ask for a quote.

It also depends if she needs sedation/GA. Is the lump under the base of the ear?
The vet might be able to determine what it is just by a physical exam. They did with Grimlock, he had a course of antibiotics (injections and oral) and it cleared up leaving just some scarring (lumpiness).
Good luck.
