Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Panacur changing taste/smell of caecotrophs?

Gerry has not eaten his caecotrophs since we've had him. He always leaves at least 1 every day, and usually 2-4. How many caecotrophs do rabbits normally produce in a day?

He's been to the vet and he may have a stiff spine which may explain why he doesn't bend to eat them. However, if I try to encourage him to eat them, he turns his nose up. They do smell quite bad. He's been on a panacur course since he's been here. Would Panacur change the taste/smell of caecotrophs?

It may do, but it is far more likely that it is his stiff spine causing the problem. Is he having daily Metacam to try to help reduce any stiffness and inflammation ?

Yes he's on metacam. He doesn't even eat them if I show them to him though.

Could it be because of bad bacteria in his caecum? Should he have some probiotics?

You could try giving him some Fibreplex

Also, have you tried the 48 hours on just hay yet ?

Try giving him some bramble leaves too, that can help.

I did give him a hay-only diet for 48 hours and he still produced them.

Today was the first time on metacam and the first day he hasn't left any caecotrophs. :thumb: I don't think it's a convenience. I'll see if it's the same over the next few days and he may have to be on Metacam long term. 2 bunnies on metacam for life :(
