3 week old bun won't eat

Whitelighter

Warren Scout
I've been monitoring the bun and decided it needed some help so brought it in for syringe feeding (I have dxierience with this and have had success in the past)

Think is the bun won't eat. Won't suck the rest and if I do get any milk in it won't swallow it and it slowly just dribbles out.

I'm at a loss what to do now. The bun just sits, very uninclined to move and even when persuaded won't take more than a step or two. Even if I pick it up it diesbt struggle or resist it just lays there. It's like it's given up.

If I can't get milk or water in what else can I do? I think it's probably in pain but it's way too small (150g ish) for any pain relief safely.

Think an urgent vet visit so called for. If it were me, I would get there tonight as an emergency.

I have no medical advice but if need be, the vet would be in a position to see if the little bun is suffering. If a bunny doesnt eat , its serious. if a baby bun doesnt eat, its definitely serious.

Yes I know it's serious.

My quiery is I'm not sure what treatment if any is available.

If the answer is no treatment perhaps the kindest thing is to save the stress of a trip and just make it comfortable

Spoken to my vet who is an excellent rabbit specialist.

As I feared there is not much to be done.

We have decided to put a heat pad under the nest and repack with straw to keep them all together (the bigger siblings are roaming a bit). I am nit hopeful but at least it is with the family. We have agreed not to try and get any more fluids or food in as the bun is likely to aspirate it.

Bunnys are such delicate little things 😞

I really would have hoped a vet would agree to see the bunny to see if there was anything that could be done, and as a last resort PTS rather than leaving it like that. I think I would try another vet if I was in your situation.

We did discuss euthanising it as an option.

Issue with a trip to vet other than to have it put down are subsequent rejection by mum and stress from the journey.

I hear your sentiments but Gill was not convinced it is in pain and anyway at the weight it is pain mess may be akin to PTS anyway.

I've my fingers crossed but I think I might be digging a little grave in the morning :(

I agree with this.

How very sad.... Poor little bun...... Is there no pain relief you can give him.. Even to ease the suffering a little?.. What a horrible situation

Gill knows her stuff and I am certain she would have advised you to take the Kit over to her if she believed it to be necessary. Sadly sometimes a Kit will fail to thrive and will simply fade away. I think Gill's advice about putting a heatpad under the nest is a good idea. I am hoping for a miracle for him/her xx

I'm currently trying to get some fluids in using a moist sponge. She has a little fight in her but not much

She's gone

Despite my best efforts Glimmer passed in the night.

Run free at the bridge little one - I'm so sorry I couldn't help you.

This is the last picture I got of Glimmer.

She is now under a new raspberry bush in the garden. Rabbits live the leaves so I hope this way she won't be forgotten easily
