What to do with regards to neutereing?

My boys have been together from 6 weeks and get on very well. They are three months and one week just gone Friday.

They are due to be neutered on Friday 20th June when they will be 4 months old, my question is, could I get them done earlier?

I'm not concerned really just seeing a little bit of argy bargy when there's food about and Finn will take food right out of Milos mouth (with no fighting back from Milo), Milo ALWAYS grooms Finn and Finn is definitely the dominant one. Most of the time he refuses to groom Milo but will give him a little lick now and then.

I've been trying to feel for anything ''down there'' if you know what I mean but I cant really feel anything. Its difficult to see because of their fur.

How can I know if they are ready for neutering and would I have to keep them separate afterwards? As long as they are still getting on well can I just keep them in my indoor/medical cage until they are healed enough?

As long as they're not fighting or humping excessively it's fine to keep them together. I had my boys done at 4 months and everything went smoothly. They will start to smell sooo much better when they're done, believe me!

I'm reaaaally hoping that is the case with the smell thing haha. They both create SO much mess in such a short amount of time. I sweep up poos at least three times a day sometimes more, and the peeing isn't exactly hitting the litter tray every time.

Just keep a close eye on them. I had to separate my girls over the weekend because the humping/chasing was getting too frequent for my liking and I needed to intervene before there was any aggression.

Rabbits can be neutered from 16 weeks, providing you have a vet willing to do so :thumb:

My Levi was neutered at 3 months. My vet did him as soon as I could see his 'bits' :)

Yeah, see if I was totally sure there was something there I would just take them. But I can't really properly tell...

Finn seems to have 'something' but I'm not sure if its his testicles or just his bottom end lol. Milo I can hardly feel anything.

Boys can be done as soon as their plums drop as long as they are over 1kg. Although they can hide them if they are feeling nervous they are usually pretty easy to spot so it may be that they haven't dropped yet.

It would probably be easier to have a look rather than a feel. If they are nervous kneel on the floor leave their back feet on the ground and tip them backwards towards your knees just enough so you can see underneath. You might prefer someone to help you.

Also if you are have feeding issues try scatter feeding instead of using a bowl.

I have been doing this :thumb: its the pellet they go nuts for, they run around in circles when they hear me rustling the pellet in the container. I scatter a lot of it anyway even before as Finn is a greedy piggy and eats literally twice as fast as Milo. Poor lad sometimes doesn't get a look in. I've been giving him a small bowl of forage and pellet on his own so that he gets more into him.

Im not worried though as Milo is the worlds best hay eater :thumb:

I'd just ring the vet, say you are pretty sure you can see them and can you book them in on the understanding that the vet checks them first. I wasn't 100% with Levi but as soon as the vet had a feel he could tell they were there.

Yeah I guess I could do that. :) The vets were pretty helpful last time. Only thing is I'm definitely going to ask some questions before I hand the boys over. The vet that they are getting neutered by has done plenty of neuters and spays but they aren't exactly a 'rabbit savvy' vet. The only reason I'm getting them done there is both the boys are getting neutered on the RSPCA, the free neutering scheme?

So i'm hoping all will go well. I want to ask a few questions such as:

1. What exactly happens before/during/after a neuter?
2. Will the boys be housed away from noisy dogs/cats?
3. Have you had any neuters go wrong recently?

I hope I'm doing the right thing. I know of people who have had the rabbits neutered there and all has been well and the vet surgeon is supposedly very nice and helpful.

I wouldn't worry too much, I don't think my vets are 'rabbit savvy' in the sense that they are rabbit specialists. But I like them, I trust them and I have never had a problem with them. Both Levi and Daisy recovered very quickly from neutering, Levi was bouncing around just like normal by the next day. I think as long as your gut says the vets are good then they will be fine to do a neutering. Boys are much more straight forward than girls :)
