  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Duplocillin (for abscesses) - experiences wanted!

I'd love to hear from anyone who's used duplocillin for the treatment of their bunnies abscesses.

Specifically the dosage and how effective this was; where the abscess was and how bad the abscess was. It'd be interesting to hear whether the bacteria had demonstrated a resistance to the normal injectable procaine depocillin and whether the duplocillin was effective even despite this resistance.

Hopefully some people have some experiences to share!

I looked up Duplocillan because I didn't know what is was and is seems to be Bicillin. You might want to go back to your title and change it to Dublocillan/Bicillin because I think lots of people have probably used Bicillin and don't know its also called Duplocillan.

I haven't used it, I used azithromycin to treat my rabbits that had snuffles symptoms and it worked. Bicillin was the next thing my vet was going to try if the azithromycin didn't work.

There's a really long post on Rabbits online titled "Lump under chin". Very good photos of treatment. The person was given Bicillin for a large abscess, and had to pack the abscess with honey for several months, the Bicillin worked really well and the abscess was almost completely gone, but then the rabbit got another small abscess, so last post I read he was starting another antibiotic because the vet worried the bacteria was growing resistance to the bicillin. But the bicillin worked really well on the first abscess.
