Young Bun
hi all, I have posted a few times on here regarding the unexpected litter of baby bunnies for a rescued stray rabbit- here is her story

A few weeks back my daughter called me to say she had found a domestic rabbit wondering alone in our local woodland area it was friendly as it approach my daughter, so me been very soft when I come to any animal I went to see If I could help the poor thing, the first day I tried so hard to catch this rabbit but failed  she was to fast for me :) anyway went back the next day and after 3 hours and soaked wet through due to very heavy rain I finally caught her :D
So brought her home and popped her in a spare hutch I put an add out to see if anyone had lost there rabbit and no one came forward so she stayed with me, my plan was to rehome her once I knew she was ok.. well 26 days after rescuing her she had a litter of 6 kits  yeap I was shocked I have no idea what she has mated with be it a wild rabbit (if possible) or domestic?? anyway she has unfortunately lost 3 of the kits, but the reminding 3 are doing excellent :D . they are a week old today, mum is super friendly and I think after want she has been through she has now found her forever home.. :D:love:

I will keep you updated on there progress fingers crossed the 3 reminding bunnies will make it xx

Glad the remaining babies are doing well.

I have a similar story. I rescued my bunny just over 3 weeks ago. She had been in a hutch with an intact male and 3 other intact males had access to her as well. Today she has started nesting and for the last 2 days I have been able to see the babies moving in her belly. Not ideal as I have just recently neutered my other bunnies as I didn't want anymore babies. I am keeping a close eye in her as she a first time mum at 7 months old.

we still have 3 baby bunnies  there soooo beautiful..
when do you think will be a good time to start socializing the kits?? mother is happy for me to check them but I'm not sure if I should handle them?? what's your thoughts

I've always handled mine from day one and mums always been fine with it. For the first couple of weeks it's purely just to make sure they are putting weight on etc. I just lift them up above the nest, check them and then put them straight back. Its best to stroke mum first then rub your hands in the straw and fur that the babies are on.
My little girl has pulled fur today and the babies are moving around in her belly a lot more so I waiting for little arrivals anytime from now. I really didn't want babies but now it's happening, it's quite exciting.
I'm glad she's having them here with me and not at her last home as the person I got her from really doesn't have a clue hence her situation now. Oh well...

Awww good luck with your litter fingers crossed everything goes well, it is exciting although a little stressful and heart breaking at times.
If my children had come to me and asked for a rabbit the answer would of been a very big NO :) as we have 2 dogs 2 African grey parrots and 5 hamsters as it is but now she's here and has 3 healthy kits I wouldn't change it, I'm so glad I rescued her and now she's in a safe place to bring up her babies.

Glad to hear your babies are doing well. "Socialising" is a very individual thing, I would leave mine alone but I know others handle their babies every day.

There all doing excellent, I so want to start socialising them but I'm a little wary as I have heard so much conflicting stories about mum abandoning them.. but then I hear that mum wont abandon them ?? its very confusing I don't know what to do for the best. also as they are now 9 days old they are starting to leave the nest very briefly but mum eats everything in sight straight away.
should I feed the kits separately to mum??

I think mum will be fine with you handling them now. Their eyes should be opening any day now if not already. They'll still be feeding from mum so don't worry about her eating all the food. They should start eating solids around 3 weeks old.

brilliant thank you for replying, I have had to handle one of the babies as it followed mum to the lower tier of the hutch.. I really need to get a one tier hutch asap :)

3 babies still doing good :D I have a single tier hutch coming today which is a god send as babies are exploring and giving me a heart attack as they keep going down to the lower tier and then they cant get back up.. one of the babies is smaller then the other two I'm guessing that's the runt is it normal to have one smaller then the rest??

You'll find it easier to keep an eye on them in a single tier hutch. It is perfectly normal to have one baby that is slightly smaller than the others. It sounds like they're doing fine so just keep doing what your doing :D

Rosie had her babies last night, on day 30 of being with me. I knew it would be last night as she was very restless and pulled more fur and rearranged her nest. She had 5 and mum and babies are all doing fine. It looks like 3 of them are going to be white like the dad.

awwww that's lovely to hear thank you for letting me know..good luck to mum and babies and to you,its lovely to have babies bunnies but its so worrying at the same time..my 3 are doing very well and mum is doing a better job now I have changed her hutch.. please keep me updated on how there doing xx

After having a proper check on the babies, there is one that is half the size of the others. I thought it was a peanut but it is perfectly formed, just tiny. Its holding its own just now and full of beans so I'll just have to see how it goes.

hi guys and girls well the babies are now 19 days old now and today they have ventured out of there nest, they have been happily exploring there environment chomping on hay and a few greens.. what I have noticed is that they are pestering mum so much for a fed is this normal for them to do this?? sorry I keep asking if things are normal but I'm no expert at all when it come to rabbits as stated this adorable rabbit was found and had a surprise litter.. also mother never seems full i'm sure if i fed her non stop through the day she would just eat eat eat.. sure I up her food alittle?? shes on a variety of fruit and veg, unlimited hay and small amount of high protein pellets.. any advice would be welcome :)

Yes, if she seems so hungry give her more, they are all a little different so it's best to "play it by ear" so to speak. And the babies do pester but Mum will feed them when she is ready :) Also now the babies are moving about and nibbling at Mum's food they will need more pellets as they don't eat a lot of hay at this stage but can eat grass and they will nibble greens.

that's where my concern is every time I give food mum eats it all the babies don't get a look in.. I have tried to spread the pellet in the hutch but mum finds them :)

Mum should still be feeding the babies herself and so she will know when to leave some food around for them. I've just brought up 3 babies from 4 weeks old and they were getting 2 big bowls of a mix of pellets and muesli one in the morning and one in the evening together with lots of grass and spring greens. I don't give mine fruit. Mine are now 16 weeks old and are more or less down to 1 bowl per day maybe a bit extra if they seem hungry later on. As your babies start to nibble more Mum won't be as hungry as the demand on her will lessen but my Mum fed her babies up to 12 weeks as a supplement really until they were fully weaned.
