Squeaky nose when breathing

Hi

I have just been out to check on the rabbits and Dangermouse is squeaking when breathing (like she has a blocked nose). She is currently receiving meds for EC but has been on them since 16th May and this has only started today. Could this be related to EC? I can't get her to the vet for a couple of hours but has anyone got any ideas what may have caused this? She's never been a poorly bun before and now she seems to be going through so much

Hmm, not something I've encountered before so let's bump this up in the hopes that someone else has an idea.

I have a bun who squeaks as he breathes and has done so ever since I've had him. Sometimes it's worse than at other times. It's just the way he is .. antibiotics haven't made any difference to it.

I would pop her back to the Vets. It might be a symptom of the start of an upper Respiratory tract infection. What EC symptoms did she initially present with ?

My experiences of squeaking have been symptoms of an Upper Respiratory Infection, which has ended up getting worse very quickly if I left it for a couple of days to see if it was the hay/weather/whatever else!

We initially thought it was dental as she started struggling to eat crunchy food suddenly after being fine the day before and although the vet said she only had two very minor spurs which shouldn't have caused an issue, he was going to put her under GA to get a better look. As I was trying to encourage her into her carrier on the morning she was booked in for the dental, she had a violent fit where she was rolling her body at speed for approx 20 seconds and squealed as she obviously didn't know what was happening to her  and I rushed her in.

The vet said that he thought the symptoms sounded like EC so I was given Baytril, Emeprid and Lapizole (She's only on Lapizole now) and she seems to have picked up since, running around etc. rather than hunched like she was earlier in May. I've been keeping an 'ear' on her all day since and it doesn't seem to be squeaky anymore, but I'm sure she breathing in differently when sniffing me for treats although now I'm not sure if I'm just imagining it's different after the squeaking :?

I would definitely take her back to the Vet so he/she can re-examine her including listening to her lungs. I'd ask the Vet to have a good look in her ears too to see if there is any sign of possible infection.

Thanks Jane, I'll do that now I know what to ask xx

That's worrying

Not like life-and-death, but the squeak definitely became more pronounced and was distressing both for bunny and I. It cleared up with anti-b's, though, so I'd definitely get an appt in the next few days. In both of my cases there has been quite a pronounced crackle when listened with a stethoscope, as well as a wheeze, according to my vet I've done a couple of threads on it as it was recent if you want to have a look...

Thanks, I will have a read :thumb:

Wheezing and sneezing are generally symptoms of upper respiratory infection (snuffles), which can be caused by many different bacteria, some more treatable than others. The worst one is pasteurella, but hopefully your bunny doesn't have that and has one of the other easier to treat ones.

I've had three different rabbits that came down with snuffles symptoms. They came from the breeders with it, and had it before I got them. Each rabbit got better after being treated with Azithromycin. Other drugs I've researched that people have used to some success are Bicillin and Convenia. Hope that helps.

Here's the medirabbit page on snuffles: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Respiratory/Bacterial/URI.htm
and the bio.miami rabbit site: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sneezing.html

Also, since I mentioned azithromycin worked for my buns, I also want to add: although my rabbits had no tummy problems some people have reported severe stomach upset in their buns after taking it. So, Only give it on a full stomach to a well fed bunny, and monitor closely.
