  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ear mite treatment

Just wanting some info please.

If your rabbit had dry ears, no sign of mites, (inner ears pink, fresh and clean - hair plucks reveal no mites under scope) but not improving would you treat for mites in case?

Is it Ivermectin which is safe for rabbits? Any side effects? How is it administered - drops, injection?? Order and administer or do I need to go to vet again?

Is your Rabbit scratching his ears a lot and/or shaking his head ? I would be reluctant to treat with a nasty chemical (Ivermectin) if there is no clinical evidence of mites. If it is simply that the outer ears are dry have you tried rubbing a bit of olive oil into them ?

Thanks for your reply Jane.

That's my thinking too - not excessive scratching and no head shaking, inner ears perfectly clean and clear. We had the same last winter, it was v cold wasn't it, and I suspected they were chapped - I used a soft brush then applied calendular cream. I am happy to try the same again - it sounds like you would try this first.

I would as I try to avoid using Ivermectin unless absolutely necessary.

Great, thanks for the advice, I'll try again with the brushing and cream - I'm not keen on the heavy duty stuff either. Thanks again Jane.
