  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cost of Rearguard?

cara

Alpha Buck
I have just rang vets and Rearguard is £32.18. I was quite shocked!

Anybody bought it recently and how much did you pay?

Also, Vets say it can only be purchased from a Vets - is this right? I have seen it online a lot cheaper but would not like to buy something dangerous online.

rearguard is classified as a NFA-VPS medicine which means it can be sold legally by a vet, pharmacist or Suitably Qualified Person. So you can buy it online where they have a vet or SQP monitoring the sale, and it will be the same product. my vet charges the same as yours and this includes application (which is why i prefer it from the vet!)

Does this include Amazon, do you know? It's a lot cheaper on there!

I got given two at work last week for free didn't realise how much it was

So if you buy it online on amazon is it the real stuff? If it has to be dispensed by a vet then surely it's illegal to sell it online without a prescription?

it doesn't have to be dispensed by a vet, it has to be dispensed by a vet, pharmacist or suitably qualified person

My Vets say they must have seen the rabbit recently or I cannot buy it from them :?

some vets do have weird policies about not prescribing meds to animals they havent seen recently (usually in over a year) just for legal reasons (to make sure the animal hasn't died or something and the owner is using the meds themselves/selling it etc.) but its odd that they apply it to rearguard! maybe its just a blanket policy

I'd imagine so. Alf is on long-term meds and he has to be seen, by law, every so often (it's either 6 months or a year) if they are to keep giving us metacam when we run out

I just looked on amazon - is the Beaphar guard the one you mean? It is a lot cheaper than the Rearguard - is it just as effective?

No they are different products with different active ingredients  the beapher one will not be as effective

I've realised that I use the Beaphar stuff 'fly guard' I think it's called. But after reading this thread I think I'm not going to bother with rearguard given that my two are otherwise perfectly healthy bunnies.

I have ordered from Vetimed at a cost of £23 incl vat and postage @£1.99. Will see how long it takes to arrive :)

Edited to rectify VetUK rather than the one I mentioned above

Yeah I realised that the stuff I ordered was the Beaphar stuff. For some reason I always thought it was the same!
