  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Your experiences of infracol, does it work?

I had an interesting conversation with an exotic pet specialist when I picked Doughnut up. She said she hasn't seen any evidence that it works and in fact a study was done on babies which showed it didn't make any difference.

I've felt it does help and seems to work for Doughnut in about half an hour, I also think Mark thinks it works as I told him I had given her some and he said to keep going with it.

I just wonder what other people's experiences are. They are both wonderful vets but seem to have different opinions.

It worked for my Buddy. He had lots of gas problems last year, pretty much at least once a month, and Infacol was the first thing I would give him. Helped every time.

I haven't used it extensively as I'm not very hands on and usually just get bunnies to the vets within about 2 hours of there being a problem.

When I've asked Frances Harcourt-Brown about it's use (about 5/6 years ago) she gave a scientific explaination as to how it works and why it might not be much use in *most* stasis/gastric upset cases (don't ask me to pass this on as I can't remember:oops:) but did say it at least would be of benefit from the point of view that you are getting fluids into them.

Currently using it with Dee and it seems to be helping her. When we took her in as an emergency late Thursday night, she had a stomach like a rock and was clearly very uncomfortable. Sarah started her on infacol and she began to improve rapidly, now she's barely gassy at all :)

Ive used it a number of times on Ozzie with good results then I used it on Twinkle just this week. I gave them too many dandilions and it caused them to stop eating.

I give 1ml then do tummy rubs and listen to their belly, usually can hear an occasional gurgle. then do another one ml an hour later, by which time luckily they are eating. I also do a little bit of chasing round to get things moving, it sounds cruel but seems to work. I think a combination of tummy rubs, infacol and chasing seems to work.

Well it works on my bunnies and since it contains simeticone, the same active ingredient which is in human Windeze capsules, I know it also works on me when I get indegestion. I think it breaks large gas bubbles down into much, much smaller bubbles - small enough to disperse them and ease the discomfort.
