  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Any tips to get Dash to take his Baytril?!

Dash has once again dribbled his medicine rather than swallowing it :( I'm not sure how much he's getting, the vet advised to dilute it with a little water but I'm wondering if I can use something more appealing like pineapple juice? Don't want to affect the medicine in any way but feel like it can't be doing much if hardly any is going in!

When Marble was on Metacam last weekend, I blended some carrots with the meds mixed in. I was also putting it on a herb/forage leaf, and wrapping that in another leaf

Try mixing it in with a bit of Veg Baby Food. Give it via syringe though. You dont need to add a huge amount of Baby Food, just enough to disguise the taste/smell of the Baytril.

These Baby Foods would be OK and you can buy them in most Supermarkets :

Thank you both, I'll try the baby food! I did put some medication on leaves for him once but it was much thicker and less of it from what I remember so it worked better but don't think that would work with Baytril! Hope he takes it a bit better tonight :/

Years ago my bridge bun Biscuit had her daily metacam dripped onto a shreedie, not ideal as a rabbit food I know but it soaked it up and she woofed it down.

i find that giving in smaller amounts helps if you want to syringe them, as depending on how much volume you are giving, it can be quite a bit to swallow for rabbits. so i give in 0.3ml increments, then let bunny swallow, and then syringe again while still on my lap.

Another is to spread it out over a number of fav things, eg, on a few dandelion or apple leaves and then fold in half the leaf so baytril not exposed to light.

As mentioned, can put it on a shreddie and thats happily eaten. but if youre bunny is a gastro problematic bunny then I would not have this as obviously it is wheat after all.

Another method is putting it over a small teaspoon of oats, and this is good if your bunny has some underweight issues.

This suggestion is fantastic - the baby food takes away a lot of the bitter taste.

Alternatively, Nena and Tapla both will take it straight out of a bowl if I mix baytril with some of the carrot baby food and some recovery food. I just give them half a tablespoons worth and they absolutely love it.

We'll I tried it with the carrot baby food tonight and I think we managed to get a bit more in his mouth than previous attempts! He does have orange chops now mind u
