  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam

I have not seen it as a side effect of Metacam. I have with other painkillers such as Vetergesic.

Could the 'drowsiness' be due to whatever is wrong rather than the treatment ?

I might, of course, just be imagining it

Louie has intermittent episodes of not eating his poops. They then get squished into his fur and he looks like a neglected rabbit. He can go for days eating them normally and then it happens again. His teeth are fine and his diet hasn't changed.

The vet said it could be stiffness in his back/joints which comes and goes and sometimes it is too painful for him to reach down to eat his poops and at other times the pain is easier. We are trialling metacam once a day for 7 days to see if anything improves.

If not, he will be getting X rays.

His normal poops are, well, normal!

Forgot to mention he also had his booster yesterday, don't know if that could be relevant?

He has been out in the garden this morning and is eating his breakfast.

i don't think it does no.

boosters definitely affect some rabbits, although the new combined one is meant to be alot gentler.

I would say it is the vaccination that has made him feel a bit groggy. This can happen in some cases and it should resolve with 48 hours xx

I haven't noticed it. Barney is on metacam and he's usually more active and happy on it, likes to run about and even do half-binkies, which he never does normally, I assume because of a lack of pain but I also do wonder whether he's getting a bit of a buzz from it

I'd say it is probably the vaccination, my two can be a bit quieter after. And I remember I always felt rough after vaccinations when I was a kid!
