Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

What do I need regarding Worming and Flea treatments?

I'm not entirely sure what I need for these two things?

I've sort of heard that flea treatment isn't necessary unless they actually HAVE fleas. Which they don't. Is this true? :?

But with regards to worming how often should it be done and how?

My boys are only 10 weeks so they haven't had any treatment yet. Just looking into the best thing to use.

Thanks.

I've never needed to de flea mine, and have never wormed them either. You could worm as a precaution but it's not normally advised as necessary.

Ah right well that's OK! As long as I know i'm not missing anything I should be doing? I wasn't sure if worming was a necessary thing or not. I had heard that flea treatment was only required in the event that one of them got fleas but worming I wasn't sure of.

Thanks :D

I've never had to treat a rabbit (or guinea pig or dog) for fleas. They are all groomed weekly so I would pick up on a problem early. My first line of defence would be an electric (battery) nit comb (eg from Boots). They zap the fleas and kill them outright. Only the cats seem to pick up the odd flea here. I only use chemical (spot-on) treatment if I have to, and then only for long enough to do the job - but I wouldn't know what to use on rabbits.

As for worming rabbits, you can use Panacur. There is a version for rabbits in a big syringe. It is a thick paste. The graduations on the plunger are per 2.5kg of rabbit. I found it difficult to use, especially for small bunnies, and they don't like the taste. I use 10% liquid Panacur for dogs - much easier to dose accurately with a 1ml syringe and cheaper for multiple rabbits. Ask your vet or search on here about the recommended frequency for worming rabbits. I do not routinely worm mine, but we did have to dose (using Panacur) for the EC parasite earlier this year.

I find the VetUk website very helpful for looking up medications and flea treatments as they give more detailed info than some sites. They are also quite good value and quick delivery.

The best thing would be to ask your vet when you take your bunnies in for vaccination. Vaccination is more important as the diseases it protects against will kill a rabbit very quickly. Also ask about neutering.
