Quick dog metacam dosage please?

Fennic

Went to the vets today with a broken dew claw, wanted to stick him on some dog metacam he's 1kg exactly. Vet said 0.7 I'm not too trustworthy of this particular vet. Can I get a confirmation on this please?

Thanks.

Edit: another question sorry, the vet clipped the dew claw right down from where it was broken also taking the quick with it, it actually worryingly looked boney, he didn't scream or wriggle when it was done, is this normal? Also, will this now grow oddly on him?

That sounds about right for the dosage.
and it may grow back looking a bit thicker of you get what i mean.
angel lost her dew claw once, its grown back in fine no problems, just gave her metacam for a few days as it was bruised too.
hope bunny is doing allright xx

Sorry no, he's a rabbit, i've got dog metacam. Theres 2 types, dog and cat metacam, cat being the more concentrated and at the same dose would kill a rabbit if I'd gave him/her 0.7 most likely.

Just so you know, dog metacam is actually 3 times stronger than cat metacam.

I'm not sure on the dosing though, as my vets prescribe using the syringe provided, so for example Barney is 3.4kg and gets a 12.5-20kg dog dose.

That is a high dose. Doughnut is 1.2kg and she is under a specialist. The most she has ever been on is 0.5ml 3 times a day. Metacam is more effective if you split it into two times a day as by say the 15th hour, most of the metacam is out of the system so more frequent dosage is better.

Personally I would give 0.4ml of the dog metacam twice a day. I'm not a vet but just going on the dosage I know I can give Doughnut.

that dose is fine for once a day at that weight. broken claws can actually be very painful for them. different doses depend on different things anyway. they may do a 'higher' dose for a short time as that would be more effective, especially if it's for inflammation aswell.

The 'standard' dose for dog metacam (1.5mg/ml) used to be 0.2ml per kg of bun. However, times have moved on and a MUCH higher dose is now often recommended as par for the course. I've not had it prescribed for a while so I wouldn't want to give out false information but Jacks-Jane would be a good one to ask, or Liz at Rainbow Rabbits as she's always got bunnies on it. Certainly in dogs, a 'loading' dose/s is given for the first few days which is double what the maintenance dose would be.

I wouldn't have any worries about giving a one-off dose of 0.7ml to a 1kg bunny.

We routinely give 0.4ml per kg once or twice a day so I think the dose in the OP is fine :)
