  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

never had to do this before. noticed it when checking him over. just one side though. i couldn't find the other one! i swear he only has one!

he was most unimpressed

I don't mind it, I get a strange satisfaction from getting a big lump out with the cotton bud......nice!!

Yayyy, a few strange ones.....I am not alone with the scent gland cleaning satisfaction :)

Never done it. What do you look for? I know thet are near their genitals but not sure exactly where or what the signs are that they need cleaning?

My buns usually get cleaned while I'm checking for messy bums, which they sadly get more often now since they're all getting creaky in their old age. :(
Since I'm usually washing them up at that time I just use my fingers. I have trouble finding cotton balls in my supermarket and the only option is swabs, which I fear poking bunny with if they wriggle.

I'm used to the smell now, but my poor daughter-who is tasked with nose rubs to keep the bunnies calm-gets rather green during the process.:lol:

just seeing some dirt either side of their bum can be a sign. just gently part the fur and there is a thin piece of skin. you can clearly see then if it needs cleaning as it has dirt inside it. kind of looks like poop really.
