Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eye discolouration

Sumi

New Kit
Hello all,

I posted a thread the other day about my rabbit Sumi who is rather poorly at the moment (http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?420516-Impaction-Advice). He has a GI impaction which is preventing him from pooing very often.

However, I've noticed over the last couple of days what appears to be blood starting to appear inside his eye. I've included a picture so you can all see. He's always had a runny eye which has been flushed my times with no affect, and the cataract is from e-cuniculi which is had about a year ago. He has a slight head tilt towards the bad eye which we initially thought was because he can only see out of the one eye (his good eye) so was tilting to see us. Also, in feeling his eye it is swollen and protruding a little so I'm thinking there's something behind his eye?

As he's 9 years old and my vet isn't willing to do any sort of surgery so I'm really just trying to find out what is wrong with his eye so I can decide whether he's suffering or not :(

Thank you, I thought it may be something like that. The link was really helpful.

He's eating vegetables and pottering around but you can tell it's bothering him.

I do hope there is something that can be done to keep your little bunny comfortable and happy for a while to come. Thinking of you x

It may be the primary cause of his gut motility problems

Really? I can tell it's giving him a headache and could even be making him dizzy as he's a bit wobbly on his legs.

I'm going to take him to the vets to see what they can do. Do you think it would be worth risking an op to remove the abscess at his age? He's had 10 surgeries in his life and tends to bounce back well (mainly teeth related).

I have to be honest and say that I very much doubt that surgery would be an ethical option. It is possible, given his 'Dental history' that if it is a retrobulbar abscess it is the direct result of infection originating from a tooth root. In a younger Rabbit this would be extremely serious and surgery would be both major and high risk. I dont think I could put a 9 year old Rabbit through so much, especially with his ongoing gut problems. But of course I am not in any position to judge regarding your Rabbit. Only you and your Vet can do that.

I would try to speak with a Vet today as your Rabbit is likely to need much stronger pain relief than just metacam. It is possible that the pain in his head from the increased pressure caused by the abscess has resulted in 'gut slow down' leading to impaction. Gut slow down is frequently an issue when a Rabbit has chronic pain.
