Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Rosy Posy is a very poorly girl :(

She's been sneezing and was due to go to the vets tomorrow evening but after a horrible episode this morning (I literally thought she was going to choke and die in front of me, she was sneezing and spluttering so violently, it was horrible) I got an appointment this afternoon and it turns out she's very poorly :( She's got an upper respiratory infection and has been put on anti-b's but it's quite bad, she freaks out when you touch her and starts squeaking so loudly because she can't breathe properly :( She's also lost just over 100g in 8 days, which is quite significant for a little bunny like her.

My poor baby :( Went through this exact same thing with Dee late last year/early this year but that progressed into pneumonia, really hoping this doesn't turn out like Dee.

Any vibes would be very much appreciated :(

Millions of vibes. Try not to worry, Mr Bennett had this about 18 months ago and it freaked me out but he recovered quickly on abx. Hope Rosy has a quick recovery too.

Thanks, Amanda. Have just read through your thread.

Haven't heard her sneezing for a while but it's horrible when she does, as she paws at her face as if she's trying to stop it. Not nice to watch :( I've already given her the Baytril, I wanted something in her so she doesn't have to wait as she was really bad at the vets, the stress had made her 10x worse. Hopefully she'll be good and take the yummy Metacam and Septrin tonight...:? well, fingers crossed! It'd be so much easier if she took it by herself as she really struggles, which makes her breathing difficulties so much worse as well. Gah. Rabbits...

Aww poor girl :(

They take extra energy when they are fighting off infections and not feeling like eating so much, a few rolled oats might help with the weight as they are tasty and easy to eat.

Did your vet give you any bisolven? Its a life saver for thinning the mucus out.

No, she didn't. I think she just wanted to get cracking with the anti-b's and keep it as basic as possible, if you get me?

Do you think I should ask about it next time we go? The exotics specialist is back from Aussieland this weekend so we're holding off going back until we can see her next week.

Do I do anything to the oats, or literally just give them to her as they are? I assume you can get them in supermarkets, so I'll try and get some tomorrow.

Yes, in the supermarket - might be under porridge or cooking supplies. If you are just feeding a little eg a teaspoon you can do them dry, but more than that and I like to mix it a bit of water in as they suck up a lot and swell. They don't need hot water/cooking though.

Aww poor Rosy I hope she feels better soon. Your description of her freaking out and squealing at being touched almost makes me wonder if she has a sort of seizure. Was she quite vocal during her sneezing fit?

No, I'm sure it wasn't a seizure. She didn't squeal, it was her breathing that increased and as a result she was snuffling/squeaking quite loudly. That's what she does when she's touched or picked up, she really starts to squeak. Depends what you mean by vocal, at first I thought she was choking so I picked her up and she was kind of spluttering/gagging (I know bunnies cant gag but that's what it sounded like), but she didn't squeal or anything.

I'm now paranoid about her eating, which I know is wrong but I'm terrified she'll choke :( She's currently nibbling on her hay. I'm out from 9 - 4 tomorrow but I really don't want to leave her :(

When my Paddy had his seizure he was making choke like noises too and he squealed when I put my hand near his head. By vocal I just mean panicked noises. I thought Paddy had broken his neck at the time because of the way he was breathing and the noises he made. I am sure you are right though. Actually Paddy has snuffles too so his breathing may have been due to that at the time.

If it would not stress her out too much you could try steam inhalations. Just putting her in a steamy bathroom for example, if she is an indoor Rabbit. Did the Vet prescribe Metacam too ? Inflammation of the nasal passages/sinuses will add to her congestion.

Thanks, Jane. She's pretty stressed at the moment and it's made worse when we touch or pick her up, but I might try it at the weekend when she's calmed down a bit. Yes, we've got Metacam as well as Septrin and Baytril - none of which she will take willingly, despite her having gobbled Metacam when she's had it before

Ah right. She was at the vets when she became most distressed and the worst I'd seen her apart from that sneezing episode earlier on, but I guess that's not surprising given the environment and the fact she was already poorly. The vet wasn't concerned (well she was naturally concerned about Rosy, but she wasn't any more concerned if that makes sense) hence why I'm pretty sure it wasn't anything untoward. That must have been pretty scary for you, poor Paddy.

Aww bless her, most bunnies do freak out more at the vet. It might be worth putting a few drops or natural oil like lavender to help calm her and also it might help her breathing in a stressful situation. I hope she will start to feel better soon x
