  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Would you take her to the vets or not?

Rosy has been snuffling recently, not all the time but she's definitely been kind of snoring. Popped her along to the vets and nothing was wrong, the vet gave her a really thorough check over and could find nothing at all that suggested anything was wrong. He said to bring her back if she starts sneezing discharge, or just generally deteriorates. That was on Saturday and yesterday morning she started sneezing  I cleaned her out thoroughly in case it was the hay, tried to get rid of as much dust as possible and didn't hear her sneezing for the rest of the day. Sat down tonight and she started sneezing again.

Would you take her along again? It's only a 15 minute journey each way but is a £25 consult charge at least :( as well as being very stressful for Rosy - my vets always seems to have dogs in! Tom examined her on Saturday and could find absolutely nothing wrong. Others on here have been saying the moult makes their snuffly bunnies worse and I'm wondering if that's the case. I don't want to rush her off (and I don't think they'll have any appts tomorrow anyway as they've been closed since Saturday for Easter, so everyone has booked in for tomorrow) and waste £25 and cause Rosy a lot of stress, but I also don't want to leave it and it be something that needs treating quickly!

What would you do?

Yes I would. Can you make an appointment so that you don't have a long wait

Does she have any discharge? Is she eating and pooing normally? What sort of set up do you have? Is there anything dusty that could be causing her to sneeze? Also How rabbit knowledgeable is your vet?

I'll ring up tomorrow and try to get an appt as soon as there is a slot, but frustratingly I don't think it'll be for another couple of days. No discharge. Yeah, everything is normal in that sense and I can't think of anything that is particularly dusty as she's always had that particular hay. Dog crate for base and free range in the room :) Well the current rabbit specialist is in Aussieland for another week at least lecturing (she's purely exotics) but there is at least one more vet I would class as very knowledgeable, probably 2. I would happily go and see them :)

I'm in a similar situation to you atm in that I'm looking after one of my friends bunnies and he's exactly like what you've described with Rosy. I don't know what to do either :? I want to do the right thing, but I don't know what that is :?

She's got worse with her sneezing so we have an appt for late Thursday (couldn't fit us in earlier with the next rabbit-savvy to the exotics specialist!), I'd rather it was sooner as she's sneezing loads but ah well. It depends if you've tried to eliminate all the other factors, I''ve changed hay, hoovered the carpet etc to try and make sure it wasn't anything else but she's no better so I've decided we'll pop her along. Could it be the hay for you?

I really hope they find something though, it's so confusing :?

She's also due to be rehomed soon and I hope this doesn't affect her chances of going to the rescue - as much as I love her, she needs to go, it's not fair on her any longer :(

He's downstairs and it's laminate down there and I just hoovered today with my shiny new hoover (yes, I need a life, getting excited about how brilliant my new hoover is :lol:)

He's on Fitch bedding here whereas at home he has wood shavings, and he's been given a different type of hay. My friend only left me with his food so I'm using the same hay and bedding that my boys use and they're all ok? Confused.com!!!

Oh dear...Is there any discharge when he sneezes? Can you check the bottom of his paws, especially if he kind of rubs his nose when he sneezes? Maybe try and change the bedding and hay back to his old stuff? I dunno how long he's with you for though, so there might not be much point :)

I could only check his paws if I picked him up. Given that he doesn't know me, he's quite nervous and scared of me, so I'd have to grab him and keep hold of him whilst he fought with me whilst I tried to pin him down long enough to check his paws, which obviously he's not going to like and will stress him out somewhat.

I haven't noticed any discharge when he sneezes, his fur around the one nostril just looks a bit damp like fur does when it gets wet. I've only seen him wipe his nose once and that was tonight and wasn't after a sneeze, but as it was just one paw, it definitely wasn't a wash. Strangely enough it was the opposite nostril to the wet one that he wiped :?:?:?

He's here for two weeks and arrived on Saturday so another 10 days?
