Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Indoor rabbit claws

Not sure if this is in the right category. ..

I have 2 indoor rabbits who I take to the vets for their claws clipped now and then. I was wondering what people use for their indoor rabbits to keep their claws worn down rather than just the occasional clip. They're fine at the moment but looking slightly longer than usual so will need doing shortly anyway.
Any thoughts?

We got Neo neutered around a month ago, and they did his nails at the same time. They could do with being done again soon but we've decided to do a little experiment.
We bought a 45x45cm paving slab from B&Q, it's rough but not sharp, we've placed it right up against the litter tray which is sort of near the water bottle, so if he wants to eat hay, go to the loo, or drink then he has to walk on the slab.

We will give it until next Sunday to see if it's had any effect, then he will have been on it just over two weeks :)

I can let you know what happens if that helps

P.S - he has boxes in his pen which he digs at too, which must help although I haven't a clue how much

Funnily enough I'd wondered about a paving slab. If fingers crossed we can buy the house we like the buns will have a 9x9 room so I'd want to put a lot of enrichment things and I could put the slabs in too. Oooh possibilities!

I have two large rough tiles in Doughnut's run, this is mainly if she gets hot and wants to lie on them to get cool. I don't think these wear her nails down, I just get them cut about every 3/4 months. There is always rabbit awareness week and also when they get their vaccines to get it done. Since Doughnut's unwell and sees the specialist I get him to do it sometimes :)

My rabbits have a rough (but not harmful to the pads of their feet) flooring and this wears away their claws brilliantly. I only clip my rabbits claws when they start looking a bit long, which is about every 6-8 months! Digging is a great way to wear off the rabbits claws- is it possible to give the a plant pot with soil or an outside run where they can dig?
