  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Dental buns - just an update on candy.

As some of you may or may not know I have a dental bun who has needed her spurs on her molars rasped every 5-6 weeks.
I have been at the end of my tether as I am
Due to give birth and another dental was looking - my vets charge between 130-160 usually.

With a new baby, house and everything else it is not cheap.
I took everyone's advise and changed her diet, monitored her closely but sadly it's genetic with her she will forever be a dental bun.

I have to admit I spent all of yesterday in floods of tears because I had come to the conclusion putting her to sleep would be my best option :( it's horrible and people would judge but the costly treatment that often is just not possible.

However, just food for thought, I stayed up till 4am snuggled with my bunny on the couch (she gives the best cuddles!) I just could not do it, there had to he another way right?
So, no expense spared I hunted for th best rabbit specialist in the area who could see her today as I feared she would not make it over Easter with her sore mouth.

I've found the most amazing vet, he got all of her notes from my vet and was shocked at the treatment she had been receiving and how much I am being charged.

He told me they had simply been filing her teeth down - which is fine but they had not been burring the teeth. There's no cure, there never will be but he took her straight in and operated on her. The best part? £79 for everything including vat.

It really does make a difference finding rabbit savvy vets. He called me straight after her op and explained everything what he had done and what he found. Also stating that she is gorgeous and very well looked after. Of course she is! She's like my child!

It just shows you how much vets differ in their treatment and prices, they are 15miles apart, one a specialist and one not. The specialist cheaper?
I know I made the right decision. Not giving up yet, he's over burred her teeth which should increase the frequency - I hope and so does he.

There's hope yet for little Candy :)

Just want to thank you for a wonderful post- you were so smart to search for a specialist- it really makes all the difference in the world, a similar thing happened to me. I had a sneezing rabbit and was given tetracycline - had to go back to the vets 3 times and the rabbit just got worse- then went to a specialist and she prescribed azithromycin and it cleared up in 4 days- had I not gone I would have just kept spending more money and my rabbit would have died.

It's awful how vets can just do this.
They're so unique and people need to be educated in this, I also think they shouldn't be so commercially sold and bred. Not enough people understand rabbits health and they consequently suffer. :(
