Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vaccination help?

I've just this morning gotton Milo and Finn registered with the vets in my home town (Vets4Pets). The lady there said they can go for their first vaccination Friday. They will only be 7 weeks. (Yes I know they are young that breeder obviously hasn't done a good job, but i'm giving them the care they need)

I'm a little worried about giving them their first vacs Friday as they have only been in their new home a week.

Do you think it would be safe to take them? I dont want to cause them unnecessary stress but I know vaccinations are important.

:(

Personally, I think it is too young as they shouldn't have left their mother until at least 8 weeks. What a pity some breeders are so anxious to sell their babies and start the process all over again - the mother is probably already pregnant again. Perhaps I shouldn't mention all the baby and adult rabbits in rescues desperate for new homes. Rant over!

I guess you'll have to be guided by your vet - are they exotics specialists - ie specifically trained in the care of rabbits?

Not that I know of. But they did say it was fine for them. There are also a lot of websites that say the vaccine can be given from 6 weeks. Myxomatosis I think. And that the VHD can be given at 10 weeks.

I'm not sure what to do.

I'm not 100% but I think the combi vac can be given from 5 weeks. Someone else will probably know more.

ETA: Cross-posted, thanks Aly!

Oh right! I didn't know there was a combi vaccine, I had only heard that there was two and they could not be given at the same time. They had to be two weeks apart? :?

Yes that's the old vaccine, the combi is a combination of both so it's just once a year instead of every 6 months for myxi and once a year for VHD. I know around here none of the vets use the old vaccine, I would have thought they would be finished with now tbh.

With the old vaccine I think for one of them if it was given too early then it needed a top up booster a few months later. It may be similar with the combi vac.

The new combi vaccination can be given from 5 weeks of age and it doesn't mention anything about boosters being needed if you vaccinate before a certain age. http://www.msd-animal-health.co.uk/products_public/nobivac-myxo-rhd/090_product_datasheet.aspx

Given that they're so young though, and ideally should still have been with mum until at least 8 weeks, I'd personally err on the side of caution and leave the vaccination for another week or two at least to let them settle first.
