  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help new problem with Ludo!

I groomed him the other day and pulled out tonnes of fur (it was loose).

He ended up with a bald patch on his neck.

It was fine for 2 days but today I've noticed he's scratched/groomed it himself and it looks red and sore.

He has no signs of mites/lice/fleas or anything, it's just on that moulted patch, and the hairloss matches his colour pattern (i.e. only black/grey fur fell out).

Is this a medical problem that needs a vet, or should I keep an eye on it? Is there any cream that would help?

If it were on me I wouldn't go to the doctor so I'm not sure you see! He's fine in himself, he's been well since yesterday and is full of beans and eating/pooing ok today.

ETA: Just looked up close and the skin isn't broken. Actually not quite as bad when looked at closely.

I have 8 rabbits and two of them get bald patches behind their ears when moulting.

Sounds ok as the skin isnt broken. If it was me I would just keep an eye on it.

Thanks. This is the first time he's moulted there so was a bit worried as my last bun used to moult more normally!

After maybe three weeks tops of my buns holding their fur, in the last few days the mad moulting has started again in earnest. Mimzy has huge bald patches on his face again and I can see Pip and Fiver will follow suit.

Must be some kind of bunny mutiny designed to keep the lint roller companies in stock. Or the blood moon or something.
