Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pen strep and baytril?

Coltsfoot is really struggling after his respiratory problem and then a 4 tooth dental. He had septrin for the respiratory and then after the dental a week ago has had penstrep as there was infection behind the tooth. But he is not bouncing back at all and is very snuffly and low. I spoke yo vet today with view to adding or changing meds and they are going to check again what has worked in the past but this evening I am very concerned about him. We have no meaningful 24 hr vets they are so awful I don't think I would take any rabbit except an urgent pts case. So I am wondering about giving him some baytril. Can you theoretically combine baytril and penstrep?

Poor coltsfoot :( we use penstrep but have never used it along side baytril. I have used a combination of baytril and engemycin for severe breathing problems with good effect. Not much help for tonight though :(

We tried engemycin a couple of weeks ago but he reacted badly to it. Think I may nebulise him tonight to try and shift the nose blockage and get onto vets ASAP tmw. Can hardly believe now how well he was 3 months ago.

Thanks Liz for answering:wave:

Sorry I don't know but wanted to send special vibes for Coltsfoot. I really hope he improves soon, it so upsetting when they don't perk up.

Thank you Byb. He improved so much when we first got him and the he had the jaw fracture a nd went downhill again and then managed to get over that and rise back up and now this.

I gave nebuliser him and he perked up a but and ate. Will ring vets ASAP tmw and ask about baytril

I have had Rabbits on Depocillin and Baytril at the same time, but not Pen Strep

Here it says that a similar Penicillin to Pen Strep (Duphapen + Strep) should NOT be administered with other abx such as tetracyclines or with other aminoglycosides. It does not mention Fluoroquinolones (eg Baytril) though

Maybe Coltsfoot now has tooth root elongation making his URT symptoms much worse ?

Thank you. That's very helpful re meds. Re tooth elongation. He just had 4 out of which 2 were long. He has very few left to come out but when he is next strong enough we may need to do another X-ray. He has not had an X-ray for 6 months.
